Why can't I get anyone to play this role?

Alright, I'm in high school and I'm in a creative writing class. One of my screenplays were selected to be in the school play. In the screenplay I have five roles and only four are filled out. No one wants to be Nelson. It's a screenplay about racism against black people. the main character ( Nelson) gets afraid of his attackers and hides. Then Nelson ends up getting protected and recused by a female character. I asked several black guys to play as Nelson and they all said no. Two guys acted out the script, One said no and the other said the story is poorly written and refused to have any part in it. Does anyone know why the guys at my school are acting like this? Why can I get people to play the attackers, the woman characters but I can't get a black guy to play Nelson? :/

  • No guy at high school age wants to be put in a weak role where they need to be rescued. You may need to rewrite the part to make the guy maybe afraid at first then the girl helps him be more confident and he stands up for himself instead of getting rescued.

What Girls & Guys Said

  • Because the guys at your school probably don't feel comfortable playing a role in which they're emasculated and humiliated. I'm sure the girls have absolutely no issue with being the one acting out the abuse, but this isn't a role that a lot of high school boys would feel comfortable with.

  • Well it seems to me that there just unprofessional. The best way, for me at least, you can pretend to to take suggestions of changes to the role and once they join just say it didn't feel right to change it. It's your play nobody should tell you how to write it. If worse comes to worse you can always get an African-American female to play the guy roll and just tuck her hair

  • Men are usually heros and not people who hide. The black people (who you've asked and beyond) probably feel it's putting them down and making them feel lesser.

People in general don't want to be the bad guys.

  • I don't know it looks like a interesting part but it's usually the female character is the damsel in distress not the guy 🤔😎

    • They also might not like what the script has in store for that character

  • Doesn't Nelson pee his pants out of fear and then change his underwear or something?
