Do you watch sports when your favorite team/athlete isn't doing good?

Let me explain a bit. I live in a country where sports are usually only watched if their favorite is doing good, that's why hockey is a favorite sport. The whole sport is dropped if there isn't a favorite to cheer. There's nothing to watch anymore.

In some other countries it seems that some sports are just so sacred that people watch them no matter who is participating. They have more of a love for the sport itself than any spesific team or an athlete.

I know people who watch the sport for the sport and people who watch the sport for the athletes. Which one are you? You can also mention which sports you watch and if your reason to watch depends on the sport.

I personally watch ice hockey only if Finland is doing good (and only the world championships), I have no additional interest to the sport. It's more of a Finnish fellowship thing. And only other sport I really watch is ski jumping, which I watch for the sport itself.

  • I watch sports because I like to watch sports. I have a favorite baseball and football team, but I'll watch regardless of their standings and I'll watch other teams play because I like the sport as a whole more than I like any team. I don't really follow hockey or basketball, but I can definitely watch a game. If someone said "wanna go see a hockey game" I absolutely would. I'd love to catch a game. But I can't set my heart on a team or watch for the sake of stats. Especially hockey. I know this is rich coming from a baseball fan, but the hockey season is way too long. It's like, if you watch the final championship game, then when it's over you get up and go to the bathroom, you come back and the next season has already started. I want to try to follow hockey. I really, really do. But it's just too long of a season. Maybe next season

  • I used to be a competitive track athlete, a swimmer & soccer player when I was much younger. Whenever there are meets & games on tv, I usually keep up no matter who is competing. Golf is a big part of my family. My dad, mom, 2 brothers & boyfriend are very much into golf. My first golf idols were Annika Sorenstam & Tiger Woods. Since their absence in golf became more often, golf became less exciting to watch.

  • I'm in the USA so American Football is the big thing around here. People gather in bars to drink and cheer and yell and generally make asses of themselves. (A great American pastime.) They do this no matter who is playing.

Personally, I don't give two hoots about any of it. Once a year I tune in and watch a game. I watch the Super Bowl. (If you don't know what that is, it's our championship game. The two teams which have proven to be the best face off for one final game and the winner gets a trophy.) I don't care who is playing in this game as I haven't been watching any of the games which lead to this magical moment. I don't care who wins the game either. But out of habit, I tune in evert year to watch that final game.

The only other sport that has ever managed to hold my interest was soccer and that was years ago. The USA women's team was amazing. They won both the Olympic gold and the World Cup back to back.

I don't watch any other sports. I've caught a few basketball games on TV in the past and I've marveled at the athleticism that goes into the game but I still can't force myself to get particularly interested. I think baseball is one of the most boring sports ever conceived, almost as boring as golf.

  • I don't watch sports anymore (I only read box scores!), but when I did follow sports, I definitely didn't care if my team won or lost. I actually come from an area where all the sports teams have losing traditions so this is a good thing that I felt this way.

  • Big hockey fan, been trying to watch the Olympic Games and have to say without players from the NHL the men's teams have been a little underwhelming to watch. So normally I would say I watch for the sport, but the quality of the players can really dictate the pace of the sport, obviously.

  • I watch a sport because I love it. In addition to that if my favourite player is playing, doesn't matter if he play well or not, I'm gonna watch the match.
Like for my case my favourite player retired from international events last year but still plays domestic leagues. Even though he doesn't perform as he used to... But I still love to watch all his matches

  • It’s all the above, I’m down with most sports and still rock the team jersey like a fanboy even if they’re losing.

But if my team wins I do the crip walk dance into Work the next day

I bet you were happy in 2008 when the Phillies won the World Series.

    • @Fauzillic_Bolt the Philadelphia Soul are the arena football team, which from what i know have been very successful. WE have an MLS team in the Union. Fun to go see, nice stadium but the level of soccer compared to euro leagues just doesn't match up

and yeah i was on cloud 9 in 2008. on my death bed, unless we win some more, 2008 will probably be in the top 10 highlights of my life

  • I'm a big Miami Dolphins fan. Many people don't realize we have the series lead over the Patriots 54-51, the longest head to head streak 9 to 7, the winning percentage 55.9 to 55.8 and Tom Brady is 7-9 all-time at Miami, yet somehow they hold a 5 to 2 title advantage.

  • Yes. I'm a huge fan of MMA. Of course I'm disappointed if my favorite fighter loses, but I'm less disappointed if he or she loses in a spectacular fight. I'd rather see my favorite fighter lose than see a boring fight.

  • What do you mean “the whole sport is dropped if there isn't a favorite to cheer”? That’s crazy.
Here in the US all the major sports have television contracts and regardless of how well a team is, they continue to be aired.
I’m more inclined to watch if my teams are doing well, which is pretty much every year with just about every sport.
