Celebrity Activism: Is celebrity advocacy more beneficial to themselves than the cause?

Celebrity Activism: Is celebrity advocacy more beneficial to themselves than the cause?
Do celebrities take advantage of their celebrity status and fame to do good , because they genuinely want to make a huge difference for other people around the world?

Or

Do their impassioned pleas only serve their own adgenda - to promote themselves , and keep their name in the headlines?

  • It's both. Anyone can donate money anonymously and time outside of the limelight. Certainly some celebrities advocate for the sake of their own image. I'm also certain some know they have impressionable fans who might join their cause and use their popularity to achieve an end. There are a lot of issues slipping by unannounced because it doesn't suit the needs of the capitalists. Occasionally celebrities shed light on issues that the masses know nothing about to begin with. I really don't care who throws the switch, as long as we can see everything.

  • Both. Would they be in this position if they weren't celebrities? Nope. Would they actually be going out of their way to be charitable if their acts of kindness went completely unnoticed? Like most acts of kindness are? I honestly don't think so. Would these "non-profit" organizations be reaching out to these celebrities, if they weren't famous and didn't have following? Probably not. What I'm trying to say is the only reason these organizations reach out to these celebrities is to benefit the cause. In reality, they don't care who about what the celebrity gets out of it (more popularity, a better image, a better night's sleep, etc)... as long as that celebrity promotes the cause. So... both.

  • They are such hypocrites. They argue for equality while being elevated to god-status by their fanatical fanbase. They preach open borders while living in gated mansions. They demand more diversity for society while living 98%+ white communities. They are against gun rights but are protected by armed guards. They advocate for socialism while their extravagant lifestyle is only made possible by the capitalist world.

  • Celbrities work for people. They promote the agendas of others.
Leonardo dicaprio pushes climate change propaganda all the time.
He is a sell out and shill. He gave a speech during am award ceremony about preserving the environment, then rented a huge yacht for weeks that burned tons of fuel.

They dont believe the shit they advocate
Actually they are promoters not advocates

If you can aligne goals why not
    They are actors and actresses

Everyone is out to further themselves
    * obviously not everyone, before some jackass says 'well not everyone', but virtually everyone for the most part

  • Not always, for sure the ones who participate without an ounce of light for doing so are more than likely genuine.
To do it in the light of their stardom is for sure a promotion if not only to sell the awairness but to keep their own relevancy in the light.
A phony is as a phony does.

  • Beyonce is an example. She ignored feminism until it became popular, then she sucked up to it like a vacuum. Celebrities are just oportunist twats when it comes to politics.

  • Some of them may actually be as passionate about the cause they support. But I think for the majority, it's just virtue signalling for attention. The more publicity they can get, the more they can remain relevant.

  • Their activism is typically far left and destructive to society in general. A lot of it is to promote the far left subculture they belong to. A lot of what they do is as much fanaticism as it is self promotion. Most belong to a dangerous ideology.

  • intent is important since it does both. i think some celebrities end up tied to agendad their managers have suggested in order to improve their standing, and some genuinely try to help.

  • They would say they are using their position as a person people will listen to, to spread the word of their cause.
The fact that it might improve their standing among their peers, and potentially further their career no withstanding.

  • It's case by case you should also look into what thee politics are because unfortunately a lot of people don't just help people for free whether it's publicity or pushing a agenda but I am sure there are people who just want to help

  • Its virtue signaling... in my opinion celebrities shouldn't talk about social issues given that most of them live in excess and will never want for anything

  • Some celebrities are honest and earnest in there activism, taking something that is important to them and being passionate in the way they try to help the world. Other celebrities do it either because they are naive or because they are told by their "people" that showing passion toward some social activism activity, will make them even more popular with their fans and bring the crazy passionate people to their side. All the celebrity has to do in that case is use their acting skills to pull at peoples emotions.

  • Mm not really, actually it can hurt celebrities to advocate for causes they believe in.

  • Celebrities are about about themselves. In order for them to be successful they need publicity and NOT talent. So I believe the majority of them use their "Activism" for person gains.

Now there is a different angle to this. I believe that celebrities think if they do good ie give to charity etc..., that good things would happen to them aka Karma. So it's hard to tell who's genuine and really care to the ones who are doing it in hope the universe will repay them with Hit records and lead movie roles.

  • I think any act of kindness should happen and it's good that they choose to do it. They don't have to-- they are already rich and famous.. now, if it helps us to see them in a better light I think that is just a happy side effect

  • Its only beneficial to them. Pure virtue signaling. Charity doesn't have good long-term effects on anyone but the person getting the do-gooder warm-fuzzies and publicity. It harms the world in many ways and many people are just too ignorant to do their research and find out how.

  • Some of them probably really do believe in the cause that they are fighting for, and of course some of them just want more attention. For example, when a C list celebrity writes a book claiming that something millions of Americans do causes autism, citing unreliable sources, it's likely for attention and money, not their cause. Then, you have other celebrities who are advocating for causes that help people, and they know that they can use their fame to help get support for their cause and raise awareness.

  • They just help make the cause known because of their fame. I see nothing bad at it and it's not bad, most of the time.

  • There's celebrities that certainly do it to get a news story about how great they are or because they're paid to. But a good bunch of them do it to get a cause they believe in more attention knowing their name will get more people to notice and consider donating

Like Patrick Stewart campaigning against abuse, he believes in that cause and knows first hand what it's like to live and doesn't want anyone to go through it. He's donated money yes but he also goes out of his way to tell others to make a change and that definitely helps. There's photos of Steve Buschemi at Ground Zero after 9/11 helping clean up and he never mentioned it. Some random people online found him in those photos years later.

Meanwhile charities that don't always get celebrity endorsement are perfectly nefarious on their own, using donations to fund big galas for executives and Sue smaller charities or else outright abuse people (Susan G Komen, Autism Speaks, and many more)

  • It's such a gray area. I think sometimes celebrities really do believe in their cause and understand they have the power to encourage their fans to take part. Completely ok.

But then feminism. I am a long-term feminist. Been one since 2005, did a report on it. All that fun stuff. Then tumblr took a hold in it. I thought "great! like minded individuals". Then Beyonce happened and I became even more stoked.

Now, I am really not happy where it went. I still call myself one, but feel apart from todays feminists. I fucking loathe Lena Dunham and roll my eyes when celebrities jump on the band wagon. People now realize feminism can be something to profit from and make their own "This is what a feminist looks like " bull t shirts. It's just gotten too much.
