Why do people like country music?

It's just sounds like a genre for girls and effeminate guys. No offense...

I think mainstream American music should be Roots Rock; a genre with elements of vintage rock n roll, folk, and even bluegrass. Artists like Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, etc. Bandanas as opposed to cowboy hats. Story telling, not constant singing about alcohol, pickup trucks, and getting laid, or trying to impress the women in the audience. Bob Dylan-esque vocals instead of whiny tenor voices like Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts, or "too deep" voices like Jason Aldean, Eric Church or Dierks Bentley.

Honestly though, why do so many people like country and not rootsy music or bluegrass?

  • Obviously, there are bad country artist that pander to an more modern audience so it's going to sound more pop like (bro country). But artist like Chris Stapleton, produce amazing songs that I would consider real country music. Comparable to John Denver, Hank Williams jr. and George Strait

    • I guess you're right. I wasn't trying to generalize ALL country artists. I admit Zac Brown Band is the only mainstream country group I like. The more "independent" country artists sound more like traditional country and a mix of roots, folk, blues, and even bluegrass. And I do enjoy listening to Johnny Cash, John Denver, Waylon Jennings, etc. Personally I prefer country ROCK bands like the Byrds, Poco, the Eagles, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, etc

    • It's like any modern music. A lot of new music is crap because the industry is cookie cutter and wants money makers. Like the mumble rap nowadays.

What Guys Said 4

  • Country includes a lot of different subgenres. Recently, country music has turned into sort of a rural alternative to pop music.

  • I like deep sounding vocals, I don't know. Generally I hate country & view it as derivative garbage designed to appeal to jockey redneck types, & I don't se a lot of women into it where I'm from. I like a little of it though, I won't lie, I keep a lot of Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson CD's around. Some John Denver too. Some of its really good. Rock is obviously better but to me, I think there's probably as much good country music as there is good rap music. Like 80% of them are derivative, contrived, bullshit, etc but some 20% is worth it.
