Guys, should the American League do away with the DH rule?

1.01. Baseball is a game between two teams of nine players each, under direction of a manager, played on an enclosed field in accordance with these rules...

The rules even state that the DH disobeys the rules of baseball.

The NL plays the right brand of baseball and the Al plays the wrong brand of baseball.

  • At any given time there are only nine players active, nine on the field and nine in the batting order. If pitchers knew how to hit I'd be okay with it. The dh adds excitement to the game

    • But the DH isn't real baseball. Since the pitchers doesn't bat when his order is due up, there are 10 players, not 9. Yes, 9 on the field at a time but 10 in the line-up at a time. Thus, not real baseball.

    • The DH is not a mandatory rule but the AL has the option to use the DH.

2 It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of a Designated Hitter for that club for that game.

10 Once the game pitcher bats for the Designated Hitter, such move shall terminate the Designated Hitter role for that club for the remainder of the game. The game pitcher may pinch-hit only for the Designated Hitter.

12 Once a Designated Hitter assumes a position on defense, such move shall terminate the Designated Hitter role for that club for the remainder of the game

These rules combine to indicate quite clearly that the Pitcher cannot be named the designated hitter for himself.

    • Regardless, the DH is a BS rule. Pitchers need to learn to play offense and defense.
