1. Music trends are always cyclical. A trend gets popular, bands and record labels jump on it to capitalize on the trend, eventually people get bored, and they move on to something new.
2. Disco was largely an escape from the malaise of the Carter administration - a low point in the history of the US. Once Reagan was elected, people's confidence in the country was restored, and the need for that kind of escape largely went away, and tastes shifted almost immediately.
3. There was some great disco music - from the funk of the Commodores and Wild Cherry to the synth breakthroughs of Giorgio Moroder and Harold Faltermeyer (who provided the music for Donna Summer's hits) - but there was also a whole lot of crap. We've mostly forgotten the crap, but it existed at the time.
