Why do you think Disco died out in the US when it was just really starting?

It still was popular in Europe but I dont think it caught on in the US or Canada as big.

    • But that didn't stop metal from exploding right at the same time disco was dying...

    • @MrOracle but was it not largely the Americans panicking that everything was turning their children evil?

    • Yes, that part is true.

  • 1. Music trends are always cyclical. A trend gets popular, bands and record labels jump on it to capitalize on the trend, eventually people get bored, and they move on to something new.

    2. Disco was largely an escape from the malaise of the Carter administration - a low point in the history of the US. Once Reagan was elected, people's confidence in the country was restored, and the need for that kind of escape largely went away, and tastes shifted almost immediately.

    3. There was some great disco music - from the funk of the Commodores and Wild Cherry to the synth breakthroughs of Giorgio Moroder and Harold Faltermeyer (who provided the music for Donna Summer's hits) - but there was also a whole lot of crap. We've mostly forgotten the crap, but it existed at the time.

  • Because it was over saturated and people got sick of it. There was a literal death of disco after it was huge. There was a huge form of protest against disco.

  • It was in the US for a short while, but some other genre dominated the music scene. Don't remember which one.

  • It's because people in Europe cab drink alcohol with 16 and In the US with 21. when you are 21 you have to work and you don't go to the disco. In Europe when you are 16 you go into a disco at the weekend

  • It was just a passing trend. Just like EDM and techno and all that. It was repetitive and not much could be done.
