Fun fact: nowhere in the rhyme does it say that Humpty Dumpty is an egg
True, but here's another thing: We know he was an egg because the original illustrator, John Tenniel, drew him as an egg, and those drawings got the stamp of approval from author Lewis Carroll.
Lewis Carroll didn't author Humpty Dumpty. It just appeared in his book. It's a much older rhyme that dates back long before the time of Carroll. He just popularised it and indeed suggested through illustrations that he was an egg when it was first published in 1810.
I didn't know that. But Carroll wrote a whole story around him, not just the rhyme. In the story Alice says he looks exactly like an egg. The story doesn't date before Wonderland, does it?
From my understanding, the rhyme itself dates back to the 14th/15th century where there was a famous cannon named 'Humpty Dumpty' and the rhyme is actually about that, but its origins aren't fully known.
He was likely originally known as a fat drunk guy, as in the 17th century the term humpty dumpty was in reference to an alcoholic beverage. Our town has a full color statue of him in the park.
True, that is another one of the potential meanings.
