I dont think you even know the plot.

" There wasn't anything else which could match it at the time. (the 1970s)"That's false.Star Wars was a landmark film because of the combination of excitement and good special effects. Few SF movies were like that because Hollywood was cautious about SF.However, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", which came out about 6 months later, was also a landmark film. "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" came out 2 years later but was in the planning stages before Star Wars but the studio was leery of putting all that money in SF at the time. Once Star Wars was successful, the studio greenlighted ST:TMP. There were plenty of other good SF movies in the 1970s. Consider these:1. "THX-1138" which was Lucas's first SF movie.2. "Colossus: The Forbin Project"3. "The Andromeda Strain"4. "Silent Running"Each of these movies was very good. The difference with Star Wars is that stuff blew up. Star Wars was a comic book... like Flash Gordon with a big budget... Storywise, it was not exactly great stuff, but Lucas did establish a mythology with it and that's what's necessary for long-term success like Star Wars or Star Trek or MCU.
@abc3643 Close encounters and star wars aren't really the same thing at all. Star trek was already a show with a big fan base but there was nothing fresh about it. People knew what they were getting with star trek.So there wasn't anything like star wars at that time. Even now there isn't.
Of course Star Wars is relatively unique. Everything else would be a rip-off and the studios only channel money on what works. So, what do you mean by "match it"?In terms of $?In terms of excitement? In terms of intelligence? In terms of respect? For those of us who appreciate actual science fiction, Star Wars is not even science fiction. It's just a carnival ride. And if you want something that came before, all you have to really do is go to "2001: A Space Odyssey". There truly _was_ nothing like that before. That's the real benchmark for science fiction film making.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF2VFgKsT5s
@abc3643 I mean in terms of appeal. If you look at it closely there are a few essential ingredients about it. It has love, It has comedy, it had surprise (with the I am your father stuff), it has depth of concept ("the force", light sabres etc) and it has character development. It had Darth Vader as an extremely ominous, charismatic villain. The good vs evil elelment where it isn't 100% black and white with the family ties between the good and bad sides of the force stuff. It is a kind of mediaeval/fantasy warfare but in space with futuristic technology story. It creates its own little reality too in that everything in the star wars universe was interconnected. All of that had a mass appeal and it was a massive blockbuster smash. One of the biggest ever. It jumped straight into mainstream thought. Nothing else from that time did that on the scale that star wars did.2001 a space Odyssey was basically a psychological thriller in space. Parents wouldn't let their kids watch that. It was a disturbing movie. A niche genre.Star wars had mass appeal. Nothing had the mass appeal star wars did.
Yeah, it's a good mythology which is a way of summarizing what you wrote.
@abc3643 yeah that's the word I was trying to think of
@abc3643 Star Wars was successful because everyone could identify with it. It was also the story of a hero's journey as he faced trails and tragedy to become his best self. THX-1138 did not posses that, Colossus did not possess that, Andromeda Strain did not possess that, CE3K did not possess that and neither did Silent Running. Star Wars was accessible to everyone who ever dreamed of something greater. Also Star Wars is space fantasy, not Sci-Fi.
And you can't really make a poll like that without specifying if its disney diarrhea or star wars you're talking about
Really? He is the only one in the franchise who can act?You are fucking clueless.
@Guffrus I wouldn't call a performing arts academy graduate clueless about acting, fanboy
Mace Windu was terrible. His 'Clone Wars' animated series version had more acting depth. "Arrgh mah hand, you cut off mah hand." Wow so convincing Nick Fury.
Interesting so you saw it the year after it came out during the re-release in drive-in theatres. You should look into getting Team Negative1's original 35mm 4k scans of the Original Trilogy reels. They look amazing.
@October808 yeah i still have the star wars blanket i used in kindergarten during na time. its still in awesome condition for a 42 year old blanket lol. i will check that out , thanks !
I think its the whole future aspect of it. It's the baby boomer that gave it all the hype to make it the big shit it is now. The movies are ok
It's on the decline. Every week something new is discovered about 'Rise of Skywalker' that makes less and less people (that includes females who like Star Wars) want to see it. Just the trailer alone shows what is so wrong with the film already.
Plus the merchandise is not selling and the Galaxy's Edge theme park is a financial disaster. Even Japan (biggest Star Wars fandom concentration) are not interested. Bandai models are heavily discounted all across the islands. Same in other parts of Asia.
Knights of the Old Republic was such an amazing game. Solid story, great characters, neat locations, hidden items, revelations, intrigue, romance (I kissed Bastilla) and even betrayal.
A classic from a more civilized time
I played all the MODs that expanded areas of Manaan and Korriban. Stuff the devs created but didn't disabled in the game. I screwed over the Jedi so badly more than once just to see how bad my characters could become.
I always play grey
Coming out in the 70s, it was so ahead of it's time in terms of creativity.
Yeah and for that time it was new and innovative, grounbreaking and dsserves it's place in the history of cinematography but we praise as if it were still a masterpiece nowadays but it just does not hold up anymore.
Well yeah. I watched the first six but not since Disney bought it and pumped them out every year. Of course they are making them for money and it's not something creative anymore.
Darth Vader was hot😂🔥
I thought so too😂😂😂
Haha good. Yeah I can't pretend to be into it!
