Hard to say, as there are a few for different reasons.
Animation: Nightmare Before Christmas.
Live Action: There was a movie called Family Man with Nic Cage that hasn't really caught on, but I get a kick out of it. It's sort of a "What if" story, much like "It's a Wonderful Life." I would say "Trading Places" is good, but no one seems to think of that as a Christmas movie.
"Family:" Gremlins; though again, it's not really put in the "Christmas movie" category by most people. Muppets Christmas Carol. Nostalgia: Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas. The Christmas Toy.
Action: Die Hard.
Christmas comedy: Home alone has its moments. I like Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Elf.

I have a tie for 1st place for me. They're It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and Miracle on 34th Street (1947)Christmas is not Christmas without these two must haves.
Definitely A Christmas Carol. Funny, good story, great animation if you ask me. And unlike the majoritet of Christmas movies, this one doesn't even mention Santa. And I like that, because while Santa is a big part of Christmas, it's not about him. It's about having a good time with family and friends and opening up your heart. 😊
I just saw a movie last weekend that was about the spruces and the Pines to Christmas Tree farms that were side-by-side and it was fantastic I will tell you anything else for those who want to watch it so go out find it look it up maybe it's on YouTube I don't know but definitely he got to watch it I saw it on ION plus television

Last Christmas, for a movie this year. All time... It's tough... But I like a Christmas carol so... Family favorite is scrooge the musical but I personally enjoy Muppets Christmas Carol. There are so many great movies though... Another is "all I want for christmas"

I've watched a tonne. I have the Hallmark channel on basically all of December, quiet in the bkgd. But probably my two favourites overall are Elf when I want something light and magical, and It's a Wonderful Life when I want something deep and meaningful. They are both perfection, in my eyes. I wouldn't change a thing.
I cannot recall where I was. I think it was a store. I happened to pick up the movie Elf (which I had already seen and loved) and some woman near me started complaining about how I shouldn't watch it because it was so terrible. I always wondered what the heck happened to that woman to have such a strong hatred of elf?
@GDG44 Wow. That is really weird. Most strangers in stores try to be fairly positive, not complain but recommend things. I think it is absolutely delightful. I couldn't trust a person's judgement if they said they hated Elf. I would think they have a heart of coal.
Forgot about Lethal Weapon. Need to make some time for that one this year.

There's 3 Christmas movies I use to watch every year when I was a kid and they were 1. Frosty the Snowman 2. Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer 3. Home Alone.
I can't decide between these gems: 1) When Harry Met Sally (Not really a Christmas movie, but it does have Christmas in it so I think it counts.) 2) The Santa Clause 3) Christmas with the Kranks 4) Christmas Vacation
I'm sure this is still debatable whether or not this movie is a Christmas movie or not, but Die Hard has always been my favorite film to watch during the holiday season.
What version of the movie Scrooged. The Bill Murray or the 1931 version. My wife is nuts for the 1931 version. The only that one is on VHS tape. Can't find it on DVD.
@humanearth There's only one 'Scrooged' (sit down McDuck and you too upcoming remake). The 1931 is 'A Christmas Carol' which is also good. But Bill Murray you know, when he was really funny.
Any version of the Christmas Carol is a favorite. Scooged is a good one. It's a Wonderful Life is the go to one for sappy Christmas movies. Freeze meister and heat miser are my favorite characters.
@October808 yea I'm not that much into the typical feelgood holiday movies and watched home alone way too often. This movie is at least sth different xD
