Why do most modern gamers care too much about graphics rather than their own skills?

Question

I grew up on the SNES/N64 on those old fat CRT TV's & the only important attributes to my time playing video games was immersion through narrative & fun replayability

I kept that mindset to this day

Narrative Immersion/replayability over "GRAPHICS"

& Just to give my own 2 cents

Most players I've met in many online games were terrible at strategies & working as a team & 8/10 make the stupidest mistakes & lack aim

Half of these fools game on their 65 4K/3-D TV with their 7 1 surround sound system but there terrible players

All that fancy equipment & still suck

Graphics were always one of the most important features, even back in the days, it was better to have a slightly bigger TV, it was one of the best selling points to upgrade from NES to SNES to N64...

If the graphics are and (were good) enough to support the gameplay the game is (or was) good.

The youtube channel "retro ahoy" made a good documentary about graphics and he started with "Everyone says graphics don't matter, but every game i played had them"

If you like at games like the original Final Fantasy games & Legend Of Zelda you'll see that the music & character development were much more important

I never once heard anybody state that graphics were important during the NES/SNES days

I have to disagree, developers have always been trying to get the most out of the hardware.

Paralex scrolling or the jump from black and white to 4 or 8 colours were as impressive as nowadays is ray tracing, or the jump from 2D to 3D.

Without these innovations, we would still be playing Pong.

All the players, especially in online MMOs, use them primarily as interactive social media. I don't care too much for those type of games. Personally, Graphics take a far second to the games story.

The standards have changed. The more high-tech things get, the more competitive the companies have become, and now players want the best of the best. It's the same with music. Now it's about who has the hardest bass, fastest sound, etc. Movies used to tell stories, now it's about impressive graphics. It was simple back then. Now it's complicated. It's hard to enjoy even anime anymore. I used to go to the movies years ago. I have never been to one in almost 8 years.

Never understood that my self. I grew up with the NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis, and an 8088 Computer with a CGA card.. Back then because you had shit graphics, you HAD to make the game good or no one would play it.. Games today are just too easy.
