From grade school to college, they kept trying to teach me to read music. And they failed, every time. I just can't understand it on a technical level; something about how my brain works. So I lack the understanding that most people have. But does that mean my appreciation is less? It was written by a guy named Jaques Offenbach. I'd like to to pause real quick and run an image search for that name. Take a look at his portrait. Notice how he doesn't have the determined scowl of an anguished genius that most composers have? One day, back in college, I was struggling through doing a technical breakdown of a classical piece, and wondering if I could bumble my way through it to a passing grade. I was decompressing in my room by listening to some of Offenbach's stuff when my roommate walked in, heard the music, saw the picture on the CD cover, and said to me "I have absolutely no idea who that man is, but I want to go drinking with him". It kind of sums up the whole experience for me.

It's hard cos it's your interpretation of someone else's art and your view may be different to person that wrote the song or movie

Yes, I've done both. Once I took a test and one of the questions was about a Bob Dylan's song.
The first time wasn't easy, but the more I did the easier it got.
