Centralia, PA... Yeah, talk about an excellent story on the dangers of improper waste management. It all started when they were burning trash in the local trash dump site and an exposed seam of anthracite (a very high-grade type of coal) caught fire and has been burning under the town ever since.
The town sits on one of the richest deposits of this relatively clean burning coal... pricey stuff and the town people were not keen on leaving it. They finally were forced to do so and the entire town condemned.
They can't put the fire out, no matter what they try, and it's expected to burn for at least 100 years or much longer. Holes have and can just open up under people into a literal pit of fire... not a safe place to walk or drive around in.
