I see it as doing something very fresh and new in the broad world of music. It sounds ahead of the times, even still being a few years old and for a point of reference, like I think if I hear one more played out, boring ass 70’s rock song on my hometown rock station, that hasn’t left the rotation for as long as I’ve been alive, I will probably keel over and die. Know what I mean? The way I see this stuff, it’s incredibly stimulating.
Really? HOW? I don't even listen to this stuff and I've heard nothing BUT this sort of thing in the past 20-some years!! Fresh would be more like going from the disco era to the punk era!I know what you mean about radio playing shit to death and back!! That's why I stopped listening to my fave "progressive" rock station back in the late `80's, it stopped progressing in the early `80's!! How many times a day do we have to hear Free Bird and Gimmie Three Steps when there's a SHITLOAD of other MUCH better music out there they refuse to even think about touching? It's also the same reason I stopped listening to the local oldies station in the late `90's!! They were playing the same 12 records over and over again that the prog station had been playing for the previous 2 decades!! For that matter, I completely stopped listeing to radio in the early `00's!! I thought that when the oldies station, who always plays stuff 20 years old, had progressed to the point of the early `80's, they'd be playing lots of great music but, they didn't!! Again, they refused to touch any of the great stuff that came out in the early `80's. I guess they're playing nothing but rap, now!!The way I see "this stuff", it's incredibly boring, repeating EVERYTHING EVERYBODY ELSE has been doing for the past 20-some years and not even worth the studio time and effort it took to record it! There's NOTHING original, here!! This is the biggest reason I love the new wave stuff from the `80's so much! Like the late `60's pychedelic era, It was so incredibly creative and original you could hear it for weeks on end and not hear the same thing twice!! NOT by the stuff radio was playing but by the stuff they REFUSED to play!! I grew up listening to psych on the radio and their playlist of psych was so INCREDIBLY narrow and limited, compared to all the fantastic psych that was out there they had to pick from!!
I never started collecting psych until the late `90's and, to this day, I'm STILL finding TONS of incredible stuff I never even IMAGINED was out there!! According to radio, psych only lasted about a year and produced a few dozen songs. At the moment, my psych collection would take 2 or 3 weeks to listen to from start to finish and, except for a few alternate version of a few songs, you'll NEVER hear the same thing twice! I've got over 54,000 records in my collection going all the way back to about 120 years ago and NONE of it is the junk from the past 20 years!!
How is this like “everything in the last 20 years?” Because it’s electronic based? It goes a lot deeper than that. It’s like saying 80’s prog rock is like The Beatles or something just because they play guitars. It’s not.
Listen to the beat and the style of the music! It's been the exact same thing for the past 20-some years. The SAME boring, incredibly over-used fake "drum" patterns and sounds, the same rhythms, the same music, the same singing, the same pointless lyrics, if there ARE any. Other than those electric vocal things they did in these two songs, which was the most interesting part, I couldn't be bothered with them after the first half a minute because I've already heard the SAME THING HUNDREDS of times before!!And, prog was mostly from the early `70's. "Musicians" today have NO originality and the kids that buy this stuff are too brainwashed by it to know any better.Up until the late `80's, music changed every so often. Since then, it's just stagnated and hasn't progressed AT ALL!! What are the people today recording that's any different than what Britney Spears did back in the `90's? It's ALL THE SAME!! And, as most of it's pre-programmed shit, there's no musicianship in it at all!In the `50's, people like Frankie Avalon, Pat Boone and Johnny Mathis were all the rage, there was also beatnik jazz, folk, doo-wop and R&B. In the late `50's, we got rock & roll. In the early `60's we got garage and surf, by `64 we got the British invasion, by the mid `60's, we got psych, by the early `70's, we got more folk, and some of the psych bands became prog, metal or glam. By the mid `70's, disco reared its ugly, pointless head! Rocks answer to that in the late `70's was punk and its softer cousin, New Wave. By the mid `80's, the bulk of disco had died out and we got more hair metal and rap reared ITS ugly, worthless head!! Psych came back again for a short while. In the late `80's, we started getting hardcore punk & metal and grunge. From the `90's onward, a lot of the bands were still forging ahead but were being drowned out by little girl pop princess drek and more rap!! Most of the pop princess stuff brought disco back and that's where music has stayed ever since!
If it's not rap or pop princess disco, kids won't even TRY to listen to it because they just can't understand it! That's mostly because they've never HAD anything BUT this junk shoved down their throats! Radio used to be a means of promoting the next new sound and giving people a choice of what they want to listen to and even expanding their horizons in the process! Now, it's just the SAME CRAP over and over again!!You can't expand your horizons if you don't even TRY to or if you just stay in one place forever! As I think I said, I've got records from the early 1900's up to about 20 years ago of nearly all genres and I'm happy to listen to ANY of them! I never stuck with just one genre or JUST the music I grew up with, like most people do. Partly, because that WOULD get boring after a while! The only stuff I don't like is hardcore punk, disco, rap, modern metal, modern country and pop princess garbage. I'm not big into opera but I don't much mind listening to it.
