Can you guys/girls give me your opinion on this situation I'm going through with my parents and moving out?

Question

I found an apartment 4.6 miles away from my Mom's house and my parents don't want me to move out that far away. But I don't think it's that far away at all and it just happened to be that distance because that was the cheapest studio apartment I could find at $1,350 per month in the San Fernando Valley. My stepdad was arguing with me about how much of an ingrate I was because I was moving so far away and that I needed to be close to my Mom because she has epilepsy and she still sees me as her "little boy" even though I'm 30 years old. She worries a lot about me and worry causes her epilepsy to trigger. But I find it ridiculous, because this basically means that I can't live in another state or explore the world because of her worry? I thought it was funny because if I chose to stay with my mom or live closer to her, then I'm not an ingrate? Naturally, my stepdad just said that he understands that I'm 30 and that I have to become independent... but that at the same time, this demonstrates that I don't care about my Mom. Which I think is lunacy! I can't live life then! This is essentially what it all boiled down to.

Yeah, parents do that, they are crazy. My parents kicked me out of the house when I was 19 going on twenty (they said I wasn't moving "forward" with my life, despite going to school full time and working 30 hours a week). Two weeks into living on my own they call me up whining about how I never talk to them or visit. This is just how it is, you have to ignore them and move out, your thirty don't get stuck babysitting them forever otherwise what is the point of you living your life? You've already dedicated thirty years of your life to them, how much of your life do you get to have? Just point out your thirty, you need to live your life now and move on (also four miles? Really? How the hell is that far? I walk two miles to work every day and another two back, that is not far at all.).

He sounds controlling and manipulative. You're 30 years old. Moving 4.6 miles away is nothing. Move 4600 miles away if you want to. You can't be held hostage for the rest of your life. Get out and live your life. Epilepsy is no excuse to do otherwise. Your mom will be fine without you. Your step dad is there for her, so it's not like she'd be living alone.

Watching kids leave home is part of being a parent. Trying to hang on long after the kid should have left is controlling.

No parent wants to see there kids go. its tough to see the ones that you gave birth to and raised and seeing growing up. im 37 years old and till this day my mom worries about me im the baby of 3. do i agree that you need your own space 100% yes we all do but you got to see it from your mom's view also. she's just worried thats all. your step dad is just handling it as best as he can bc lets face it any sort of disorder from mild to sever is horrible and he just wants to make your mom happy. can blame him like the saying goes if mamma isn't happy no one is. just let her know and feel that your not going anywhere but you just need to experience life on your own but you will be there for her when she needs you. trust me it will get better.

If your mom has a partner (stepdad) why are you wasting time thinking about moving 4.6 miles away. Just move a town or two over, get some space so they can’t expect you over for every meal. Then invite those cute girls on your tinder account, hit the strip club with some friends, ask out the bar tender then make mama proud with some fucking grandkids.

I think your stepdad isn't demonstrating a lot of empathy with your situation.

He says that he understands the situation, but then tries to morally blackmail you into not doing what you want to do. It's not as if you're moving to the dark side of the moon, you're just up the road.

I agree that you are not that far away. You can be there in 10 minutes, which is much sooner than most adult children can drive to their parent's house. I think that will blow over if you visit often, calling first to show them just how close you really are.

My opinion is if i was you explain to them that you need your own space
and i don't think 4.6 miles away is that far from them. Maybe tell them you
would check in with them and see how they are doing. I believe you need
your own life cause life's too short. I think they shouldn't be making excuses
cause you want move out. You're entitled to your own life no matter what.

Helping my mom in what way? He does help out with the rent the most. He puts in $1,000 per month while I pitch in $300-400 per month. I've offered to put in more but he would always say that it wasn't necessary. Funny enough, he still has the audacity to talk about how much I've benefited by living with them and how he puts most of the money down for rent even though I've offered to place more. As if this is enough reason for me not to move out! As if moving out is some kind of irredeemable sin because of the benefit I've had living with them, and now I'm an ingrate!
