The person who's pet just died no doubt had worse days before in their life and will have worse days to come... We all do. But at this specific moment in time and for their specific life, it's a shit time.

Its not psychopathic to say what this person said though, since they are acknowledging the pain and suffering of others around the world.

They're just up on a self-righteous high horse, trying to express their superiority in world view knowledge. They either were having a bad day or had something worse hit them directly (compared to a dead pet) and got triggered when someone else appeared to get emotionally upset over a pet as they were emotionally upset over whatever the hell they went through... So they decided to target this person and take them down a peg.

There’s also different types of pain and trauma, emotional for one. Emotional pain can be more painful than physical pain is. I’m not saying that kids dying is better than a deceased pet, but everyone has their own pain.

I think he was just more or less quoting the old phrase - I complained about having no shoes until I met a man who had no feet. Singly, someone's loss is due empathy. What it is effectively saying is that "your pain shouldn't matter to you because there is greater pain in the world". This may be an attempt in poor taste to help you overcome your grief.
