Why do bad, toxic people see themselves as good people?

Anonymous
My sister's ex boyfriend was like that. Our parents, her close friends and others saw through him how toxic he was. We all saw he was full of BS. Eventually my sister dumped him.

Even with all those dislikes, he still (literally) called himself a good guy just because he never hit her. He really thought he was treating her like queen. He gave himself too much credit to the point of saying that she's healthy because of him.

Seriously why do toxic people see themselves as decent, good people?

If I were hated by the guy's parents, their friends and many other people... I would be wondering what I'm doing wrong. That guy really thought he was a great person and that everyone else was wrong, that all of us were the problem. Even that guy's best friend started arguing with him too.
