Why do many people think Marilyn Monroe was plus size?

As far as I can recall from what I read in the past she was about 167 cm tall (5'6") and between 50-60kg. Her body measurements were something like 37-23-37(94-58-94), which would fit without problems in a size US 4/ EU 36 today. Sizing was different in the past, she wouldn't be size 16 now.

She had moments in her life when she got bigger like anyone else, but she didn't get famous for her bigger look. She also had some miscarriages, so she was pregnant at some point. I don't get why people use this false information about her to encourage being plus size.

The white swimsuit photo shoot was taken around the period when she was pregnant if I read correctly.

  • Several reasons:
    1) Only taking those pictures into account that were taken when she put on weight or was pregnant.
    2) Making the conclusion entirely around her clothing size numbers of those days.
    3) Anyone not bone-skinny these days (especially if they got luscious curves like Marilyn and the other actresses from the 1950's) is 'plus size' lol the modelling industry is ridiculous and Marilyn might as well be considered plus size compared to what kind of models these agencies desire in the present day. Many models in the industry below the healthy weight range are modelling plus size clothing out there... So yeah. The only case when calling Marilyn plus size is actually legitimate.

  • Today
    5 ft 6 95
    5 ft 8 105
    5 ft 10 115
    6 ft 120
Are examples of is an average weight for models

    5 ft 6 135
Would be plus size weight. For model. Today.
For a regular person, is it average.

Back then, the twiggy look wasn’t quite in yet. So I don't know if she was considered normal. But by the late 60s 5 ft 6 95 pounds was where it was at.

It’s nothing new for average sized models to be skinny size, for average people.

  • They are probably looking at that she is less toned but that is it. The difference in clothing sizes is about a two sizes. Back on the late 70s when I weighed 95 lbs I could wear a junior size 5 and now at around 120 I can wear around the same size like a size 6 which has a bit more room than a junior size 5. It's magical sizing.

  • Because it makes lazy, fat women feel better about themselves. It’s hard for modern women to have a waist that small due to all the processed sugar AND scientists have said that the stress a woman gets from competing with men (feminism) makes her body produce more testosterone which makes her body have more masculine proportions (fatter waist).

Plus people got way more exercise in the old days!

    • Well, I am the same height as her and I still don't have a waist that small. I think her's was down to 22 inches once. My smallest was about 24 inches and I didn't have much body fat then. It depends on your body type and bone structure too. I would have to remove ribs to get to that point. She was curvy even for those times. But yeah, I agree women today are not as curvy and thin as in the past. Even statistics show it.

    • SHe wasn't curvy even for that era. 5'5" 130lbs about a regular attractive woman. What set her apart from women back then is that she was really the first famous health nut and the first actress to brag about being on a diet. If you look at her pics she's also very toned for the time.

    • Honestly she doesn’t seem any more toned then typical Hollywood actresses of her time to me. They were all swimming, horseback riding, dancing at a pro level back then

  • Her body is not attractive to me. Rear looks flat. Overall the features are just very plain. Nope.

She's not plus sized, but she's not thin... she's like some weird pear shape. Not even close to a nice hourglass is she to me.

    Sorry not sorry Marilyn :)

  • She was curvy but well toned. She was fanatic exerciser. When pregnant, which she was several times before losing her babies, she'd plump up: *Let's Make Love," "Some Like it Hot." But she looked good no matter what.

  • Well she was by Hollywood standards. She would be today as well. But by normal people I'd say in first photos she'd be even skinny. Second ones she's curvier but far from overweight.

  • I mean she is heavier than the average model, then and now. So I guess she is technically plus size when compared to the models then but now she would have been pretty average.

  • She wasn't plus sized but she is a significantly more realistic body shape then the runway models of today. She didn't have a thigh gap. Her thighs in general are big and muscular. Her stomach isn't perfectly flat. Fact of the matter is if she was to walk into a modelling agency today she'd be told to lose weight.

    • Realistic? Nope, it is less realistic to have her bofy proportins than be a skinny model. You couldn't look like her even if you tried unless you are naturally blessed with the same body type. maybe.

    • Yes a 23 inch waist is smaller then many women can attain. However, I am talking more about the fact that despite being skinny she still has visible fat. She's tiny and still have large muscular thighs and the occasional belly role. That is far more attainable then say a thigh a gap.

    • It is not. You can't attain such a small waist while having big boobs and ass, unless you are naturally made like that. Just like thigh gaps, you either born with them or not. And thigh gaps aren't even hot.

  • I think that's a common misconception. In the movie the Wonderboys, they talk about how tiny she was when examining a jacket of hers.

  • She put on some beef in her 30s.

    • At her heaviest she was only 140lbs. Most of her adult live she was between 125lbs and 130s. 5'5" at 140lbs is NOT plus size.

    • @ronaldo75 it's not weight that matters, it's fat.

    • @The_White_Queen. True, but weight is an indicator of body fat. If your BMI is at the lower end of the normal range, it's highly unlikely your body fat percentage is high.

  • Some of the pics don't do her justice. Never would I have considered her to be a plus-sized woman.

  • She’s obviously quite thin so I don’t know why people say she’s big 🤷‍♀️

  • It's the "body positive" types living in their fantasies, as usual.

  • I wouldn't class her as curvy. I think especially in her younger days she was skinny.

    • Curvy doesn't mean fat

    • I didn't say it did.

    • Curvy means you have curves. Her body proportions are very curvy. That is why is called wasp waist

  • She wasn't plus sized but by Hollywood standards, she was. She was shapelier than most of the very thin actresses. Also, in comparison to todays fit obsessed standards, she was softer looking

    • Nope, most actreses were as thin as her at that time.

  • she was indeed skinny especially when she was taking lots of drugs but just like her copycat anna nicole, she had fluctuations and as the last pic shows she was indeed not always tiny

  • Plus or minus!!! One of the sexiest women that ever lived.

  • She looked thinner and more attractive on the monochrome pics.

  • I think she was perfect. I would have fucked her to death

  • i mean she looks plus sized in the white one piece but the others ones she probably weighed less

  • In the modeling world today she would either be told to lose weight or gain weight she was on the cusp of plus size model. My hips and ass alone could put me in the plus size modeling. Modeling industry is brutal.

  • She's not plus size in my mind, although she does look bigger in those swimsuit pics. But society's and the fashion industry's sense of what is"plus" is all out of wack anyway.

  • Because men & women of the 21st century worship skin & bones.

  • Wait, people are using Marilyn Monroe to promote being "plus sized"? wtf lol, she has what many still consider an ideal-- or close to ideal-- female figure. These fat acceptance idiots will grasp at anything
