My husband experiences the same thing with male and female friends on Facebook. Basically, people are getting more shallow, they're attention-seeking addicted, and have short attention spans. Not all people, and not as a complete state; but on Facebook, the majority post personal things, and hope for Likes and praise. Anything beyond that, and the response rate seems to drop significantly.
So how does one tell how much you factor in, vs. the above-mentioned causal factors? Short answer - you can't, very easily. But if they did really want a relationship, did care enough, one could fairly safely conclude that they would make the effort.
