How does a guy like a girl for years and then suddenly change his mind?

Does that happen often? This one guy liked me for many years and I did not know it! I liked him to, but I had no idea he liked me. Then, when I finally got the guts to tell him I liked him, he said he didn't know if he liked me anymore (aka probably not, right?) How does that happen so fast?

  usually when a guy want your attention and you never give it to him..just like you mentioned above then after a while and when you decided to give it to him then he no longer needs it

  Sad, I'm so bummed. But just in the last month he's sent me a love song that reminds him of me... and he said he loves me as a friend, that he wants me in his life forever and that he loves me to the very core. If that's not confusing, I don't know what is. but he doesn't joke with me the way he used to. he kind of ignores my jokes actually. so maybe he just loves me as a friend, but love songs remind him of me?

  maybe he was shy.. or maybe he wasn't sure if you would risk the relationship..guys usually don't ask their bff's out because they don't want to awkward after that and then grow apart for each other.

If it's years, it did not happen fast, it happened incredibly slow that's why he doesn't have feelings for you anymore. He probably gave up after spending so much time on you and have nothing happen, he might even resent you for it, especially if you gave him mixed signals.
