How do I get over the shyness?

Baby steps, combined with some mind tricks and games..

You can start off with asking random people for the time, asking for directions, asking if you can walk with them to the destination, etc., etc. That'll get you used to talking with them out of the blue..

Hell, if that's too hard, you can just start by practicing walking by, or making eye contact, or waving at them, etc.

Then you can get over your fears by making a game out of getting rejected.. Try to get rejected in the most outrageous way..

Then you can focus on specific parts of the interaction you're having trouble with by making THOSE into games.. You can even assign points to your performance and plot them out over time to see how you're progressing..

Seriously.. You can make ANYTHING into a lighthearted game.. It'll take the edge off your nerves..

As for mind tricks: there are some tricks you can do that can help you get a boost in confidence, intensity of the interaction, etc.

There is a book called feel the fear and do it anyway. I used to do the sales and it teaches a lot of thing, most importantly being tough minded, handle rejection. My advice is to practice or do what you are afraid of, doing it over and over again makes it easier.
