If tomatoes were domesticated in Mexico which didn't have contact with Europe until the 1500s, how did Italians ever cook without tomatoes?

HOW?

  • This was a sad period in Italian history. Basically, everyone just sat around eating plain dry pasta. they were so demoralised they didn't even bother cooking it. People would go to church and have Masses said praying for tomatoes. There were a few aad attempts using ground up apples, but those people were burned at the stake for witchcraft.
