I know cream cheese frosting is used in between the layers of a red velvet cake but what about the very top layer? It had the same consistency of icing but it tastes like cream cheese. It was hard and stuff though so it wasn't cream.
I know literally nothing about cakes. So I wouldn't know if it's a special type of fondant or what. I don't even know what a fondant is. I just know about using icing as a too layer lol

It's all cream cheese frosting. Just the top has a thicker layer of it. It's the traditional frosting for red velvet, spice, and carrot cakes.
It is cream cheese but sometimes there's a blend of white chocolate too. Hence the hardness

Pretty sure it's usually cream cheese icing, though I've seen people use buttercream too before.
Cream cheese frosting. The outer portion gets drier and harder sometimes.
