Why do people assume that I never cook because I keep my kitchen clean?

This is something that has happened to me several times, with different people. When I have guests over, they often glance into my kitchen and say "I can tell that you don't cook".

It seems to be because they don't see any pots sitting on the stove, but when I cook, I wash dishes and put things away. I thought that was the normal thing to do, but I guess not.

Am I missing something here? Do most people not clean up after they cook or something?
I very rarely go into other people's houses, so I'm not sure.
