Isn’t white sugar enough?
White sugar has no flavor or subtlety to it, it's just sweet. Which is ultimately boring.

Melt the sugar with the butter. always. Mix the wet ingredients first always and add the mixed dry ingredients in little bits to that wet mixture.
As for the baking powder it will be ok just make sure you don't add too much. When you have both you need to add both to make them perfect.
