It's really looking like a good idea folks. I know fertilizer and water costs money and it takes time. But dang, food is going up, we got some serious problems in the world. Nothing like having your own food.I grow a garden every year and give bags of stuff to neighbors. Build good relationships with people. Build community, and free up food for others in the world.
Easiest stuff to grow in my area, Ohio: Potatoes - grow well in containers with little effort. Peas Tomatoes Green beans - multiple rounds of produce each year. Lettuce Kale
Trees/shrubs: Peaches - but a lot of work to tend, prune, and keep bugs at bay Apples Pears

I have an 40 ft. X 80 ft garden that I grow veggies and fruit in every year. I usually grow two crops of beets per season and the same for lettuce and beans. I also grow carrots, parsnips, leeks, bunching onions (scallions), peppers, corn, spinach, herbs, four varieties of winter squash, zucchini, three different varieties of tomatoes (tomatoes are a fruit), cucumbers both slicing and pickling, leeks, rhubarb, strawberries and raspberries and I also have apple and pear trees. I get pretty much enough to last me a year so I only have to get a few things once in a while from the grocery store. I make may own tomato sauce and can it I make salsa and can it, I make pickles and can them. I buy a pig carcass and break it down, cure and smoke the hams, I cure and smoke the pork bellies to make my own bacon, cure and smoke the hocks, and cut out other roasts such as the loins, which I make some into Canadian bacon, the tenderloins go into the freezer after I vacuum pack them and the same for other roasts, the trimmings and one of the butt roasts get made into sausage. I also wait until prime or standing rib roasts are on sale for $4.95/lb and buy two or three whole rib sections, I get the butcher to cut the chine bone off of them and when I get home I remove the bones and the cap and save that for stew or beef soup and cut the rest into 1" thick rib eye steaks which from three whole rib sections I get about 42 steaks that I vacuum pack and into the freezer they go. I eat well and inexpensively. There's nothing like fresh fruits and veggies from your own garden, they taste better then what you can get at any store or market and are better for you.
That's awsome!! So right, it tastes better. Great tips of beef and how to save, stuffis getting expensive. Had a nice holiday dinner with my family but it was over $50 each for steak dinner. Things I don't know. must have been raised on the farm to know all that. And you can grow all that in Canada? no greenhouse or hydro garden?
No, just start the seedlings I'm not planting direct in the garden, indoors and I have a setup with LED grow lights that I can raise as needed. I have an old Garden Way Troy Bilt horse tiller that does most of the work. I keep the soil Ph at 6.5 and side dress the appropriate plants with a teaspoon of 5-10-10 about once per week and irrigate properly.
I'm in the Toronto. Area and we're not very far north. If you follow the parallel's across you'll see we're just slightly north of San Francisco. In fact there is a huge area of the US that is quite a bit north of us here. I have a buddy that has a farm raising cattle and sheep so I get a tri-axle load of manure from him every other year to keep improving the soil. I'm getting ready to order my seeds so I can start plants indoors around Feb 15 and onward.
I've been gardening with my parents since I was around 3 or 4, they've passed now but I still have their house and property and the garden they used, so it's a well established garden. I have a huge black Walnut tree that thankfully is not near the garden but I've never tried to harvest the walnuts that would. Be a heck of a lot of work and take for ever.

No, I was an only child conceived late in my parents life but I lost them to a car accident. The problems with a black walnut tree is that most things won't grow within 30 ft of the drip line.

I live in the suburbs of the city and the city just passed a trial bylaw allowing homeowners to have up to six chickens living on their property and for obvious reasons no roosters. It would be nice to get the fresh eggs. I was thinking of getting dual purpose hens so tjey're also good for meat.
give it a go. my farmer friend is in a weekly battle to keep those chickens alive. everyone likes to eat them, especially minks. Met other people more successful... gotta have good safe place for them that is secure.
Nah i technically live in the outskirts like the suburbs. So across the bridge is the city and down the road is garden plots and farmers. All about 5 mins away
