Does this make me a terrible person?

Question

I was going grocery shopping and there was this woman outside the store asking for money for her homeless drive. I made eye contact with her and by that point I would’ve felt terrible ignoring her. So she started showing me that she had pictures of the drive to prove she was legit (she showed me her photo album).

She told me she accepted Venmo for donations but I told her I actually do not use Venmo. She then asked me to go in and buy a gift card!! I said no but she was persistent so I said I’d see what I could do.

When I came out of the store, I ignored her and she was yelling at me as I walked away. I feel bad because I do think she was legit but the gift card thing makes me uncomfortable. She had a cane so which made me feel extra bad, I don't know why.

was it mean to walk away without acknowledging her?

The gift card request and her yelling at you made her to sound like a sure scammer. If she was legit she would have credentials and would have been using more legit means of raising funds and would have thanked you for your time instead of yelling at you.. Had it been me I would have called the police on her for possibly being a scammer.

Yes that was mean. You could've at least stop by her and say sorry or something.
But I'm not blaming you. Life is a rat race in many countries. So many get left behind by the system.

I try not to look the beggar in front of my local supermarket in the eyes. That's very mean in my opinion, to act as if they're invisible, but I can't give money to everyone who simply just asks for it.

Just say no next time. It wasn't necessarily mean by if you don't make it clear that you're absolutely not interested in donating they will keep persisting.

She just can't demand money or card from you as If it is her own money... she should be happy if someone is willingly giving her money... If someone is not able to help rn so he should not act like its her right and she has to get it at any cost... you should remain calm 🙌

I think that most charities are scams. The administrators make 6 figure salaries and very little money goes where it is intended. Just to be on the safe side, I don't give to any of them,
