It's not weird, and it's still a pretty prevalent double standard in today's world. I'm not saying go out and punch someone in the face, but don't be afraid to defend yourself if need be.

Yeah but what about in a class sparring? I know the girls want to be there but I feel guilty hitting

It's sparring, the point is to put your skills into practice. Holding yourself back doesn't help you learn to properly land blows, nor does it help her learn how to properly defend from attacks
