1) The closed questions thing has to change. 48 hours is too little and an already selected MHO doesn't mean more advice should not come in. Push it back to 1 month of inactivity and THEN make it closed.
2) Private opinions will be easily abused by trolls whom moderators won't be able to moderate.
3) If you really insist on making closed questions, then at least take them OFF the feed. Why the bloody hell would I want them to be there if I can't do anything with them? To read them? Let's be honest, the only instance when people read really old questions without the intent of posting an opinion on them is when they explicitly search for that type of question. No one want's to read anything if they don't have a chance to post their own opinion there.
It's ok. But the "closed" feature should be optional! Why would we want to stop our questions from getting opinions? That's literally why we joined this site lol Good advice doesn't stop, sometimes I get the most helpful advice from people months after I've asked the question.
@Mekkalyn and now I don't even get notifications! Only from silly things like somebody chose an MH, that's not mine, on a question I responded to! Wtf GaG? Lol
I know, who cares about that? Maybe someone who uses this site very rarely... for anyone else it's another annoying feature that people want reverted lol
Like I don't care that you chose someone else for your MHO.
Ehh, this could potentially be really good but right now is just kinda irritating. The number of different notifications you can get seems to have increased and the notifications tab looks a lot more cluttered now than before.
The private option could be good in that people may now be more willing to give kinda... Unpopular opinions because they won't get the backlash of it but it takes away the social aspect of the site, I think.
The way questions are being closed also seems pretty pointless. I mean, I just don't see any benefit of it but I can see a lot of issues with it and from what I can see, most people aren't too happy about that or the way they're limited by their XPER level.
Ah, I thought of something that might help make the site run a little more effectively. The new reported page for mods is really awesome at helping to find things that should be removed and it's good to get the feedback from users, but I thought maybe updating that a little bit to show the reason why the posts were reported in the first place would be helpful?
I mean, right now we can see how many people reported it and it'd be useful to see what they reported it for. I think it'd help mods a bit, especially in terms of removing 'offensive' posts because everyone finds different things offensive. Like a girl may not necessarily see a comment as offensive but guys will and a female mod wouldn't remove it. If it got reported say three times by different users all for being offensive, it'd help the mod put aside their own ideas of what is and isn't offensive and follow what the community is indicating.
This probably doesn't make sense, I just thought it might be a useful idea.
Less opinions on more questions? Surely more people will be asking the exact same question that was just closed, even more than they already do.
I thought the aim was to improve the search system, let people confirm if their question was already asked (and maybe even participate again) and promote other topics as well. By closing questions, you're basically forcing people to ask the same question over and over - and subsequently, forcing people to answer the same darn questions.
Surely this site isn't aimed for intelligent people, but what does anyone gain from this? If you're going to close questions, might as well delete them altogether because they're just wasting space.
All I have to say is stop giving us updates we don't ask for you always end up taking away things we like or "fixing" things that don't need fixing and after us having complain that we want the feature or thing you took away to come back and otherwise completely ignoring the things we do ask for.
For all the listening you claim you do you quite frankly do very little of it and the little you do is only after we have to beg for you to bring stuff back that never should have been taken away or messed with to begin with and I am sure I am not the only one who thinks this.
The hard work you put into these updates regardless of how much we dislike them is great now just actually listen to what we ask for and put that hard work towards those things.
NO DISLIKE BUTTON, NO OPINIONS AFTER MHO! STUPID UPDATE! PEOPLE CHOSE THAT "CONTENT" NOT FOR HOW MUCH, BUT BC WE DIDN'T WANT THE OTHER CHOICES! i HATE IT
Never wanted the stupid downvote button back. These changes are ridiculous. In what world does closing questions on a question/answer site make sense? I've gotten some of my best answers on questions a week, sometimes 2 weeks later. All I see scrolling down my feed is a bunch of closed questions. And the private opinion thing doesn't make sense either. That's why the Anon feature is for. I never bitch and complain about updates on here but this time, you've gone too far GaG. I was straddling the fence on taking an extended break from this place. You've made me want to deactivate all together. Good job.
Closing questions is dumb. Truly all of these pointless notifications is going to make me leave the site. I don't want to see anything other than notifications about me. Until this goes back to what it was, I'm not using this site any more.
Also, just to update my comment. I log on daily to see if I have a normal 2-3 notifications rather than the 37 useless ones that I still have. No luck yet. I really won't be using this site until the undue notifications are removed, or I am able to customize to only see the notifications that I want to see. Until then, I just don't have the time to sift through them all.
You can customise the notifications you want to see. Just go to the Settings page under your Profile and check or uncheck the boxes to turn them on or off. ;)
The notifications are out of hand in my opinion. I don't need a notification when someone I followed asks a question. Should that not get shown on the live feed instead?
I just feel like now I am getting bombarded with notifications and have to take MORE time just to clear them. I don't need to know every little thing that happens. I can search the different fields and live feed for the information I need. I feel this feature is way too complicated and cluttered now.
It was perfectly fine before when it was just questions. OR is it possible for me to 'unsubscribe' to certain notifications?
So, could this be the reason why GAG went down today without warning?
Well, if you are going to close questions then it needs to be marked, so one doesn't click it in order to answer it; so that needs to be visible before you click the link to answer a question.
"Only the Asker and the Opinion owner can see Private Opinions" ... hmmm, hope this doesn't turn into a dating site :) All too many GAGers seem to already think it is!
"Just hit the Settings page on your Profile to turn all notifications on or off individually." Thanks, now I don't have to wait until I'm at level 7 to get rid of the annoying "You've answered 20 questions today"
... oh and just wait for a slew of downvotes from me in the unforseeable future *maniac laughter* ;) ;) ;)
What I don't love is the new notification system...
I am super confused now that it says "username also replied to the opinion 'I just find it funny that...'" like I leave so many opinions I have no idea which one that is? Why did you get rid of showing the title of the question? It should go back to "Username replied to 'insert question or mytake title here'"
It's actually really annoying and leaves me completely in the dark of what the notification is so then I am forced to click on it when perhaps I wouldn't want to lol
@dudeinohio No. That's not the problem that I'm having. I know about that.
I want to know the title of the question that has got the reply to not the first little bit of my comment that has the reply to it.
Ex: The question is: What's your favorite color? I answer: My favorite color is blue. Someone replies to my comments. The notification would say: SoandSo replied to your opinion "my favorite color..." rather than it saying in the past "Soandso replied to your opinion on the question "What's your favorite color?" or whatever wording that was.
Pushing new and/or interesting questions can be done by changing the livefeed. GaG used to have it where comments to comments can be seen in the livefeed. This pushed up interesting questions because people could see or engage in lively dialogue. It also helped bring attention to older questions with fewer opinions. Bringing that back is much better than closing question.
If you do close a question it should be after a longer period, like a week or two. Many times people get better answers after 48 hours even if after they selected MHO.
I do not like being notified that an MHO for a question I've shared an opinion on has been selected, unless it's me. I didn't care that the Asker had upvoted my opinion either.
Closing questions is a decent idea except this will encourage people to ask the same question multiple times, something that is already a problem among a minority of users who will keep asking until they are told what they want to hear.
I had eight worthless notifications when I logged back in, out of nine total.
Three of 'THIS POLL WAS CONCLUDED, DID YOUR VOTE TIP THE SCALE?' Three of 'GENERICUSERNAME SELECTED AN MHO FOR THIS QUESTION' Two 'ASKER LIKED YOUR OPINION'. One reply to my opinion.
I think you're making a HUGE mistake in closing questions like that. Yes we should have the option, but don't force it. I think you're going to kill your site with that one - what's the logic behind it?
Can I still reply to this? Okay then... Yeah, I don't like the question closing thing. Even when Yahoo Answers did this (they don't anymore), they at least gave 3 - 5 days for answers. 48 hours is a short window. Not a fan of this decision. Some of us don't log in every single day.
Ideally, a question would remain valid as long as the asker has not chosen to close it.

Oh ffs, this new update is the epitome of stupidity. I thought it was impossible for GaG to get any worse, seems that I was wrong. I'll just wait and see what you'll come up with next. Maybe we won't be able to answer questions anymore. Maybe you'll just set this up to be a dating site instead.
Why should the questions be closed? That's a terrible idea. Some people pick mho hours within asking a question, others within a day. It's not fair to the people who are here for more than mho % that we can't contribute to a discussion because the asker was hasty in selecting a best answer.

My only complaints with the recent updates:
1) The closed questions thing has to change. 48 hours is too little and an already selected MHO doesn't mean more advice should not come in. Push it back to 1 month of inactivity and THEN make it closed.
2) Private opinions will be easily abused by trolls whom moderators won't be able to moderate.

i appreciate what you guys are trying to do, but i don't understand the logic behind some of these implementations.
1) hate the notification change; it clutters up my feed.
2) mho is about to become nonexistent~ why give one, if the question will just be closed?
3) the private opinions feature is a noble intention, but too open to abuse and exposes young people on this site to predatory behaviour.
/my 2 cents, for what they are worth.

BOO to the "closed" feature. Downvote! :/
even with all your upvotes the still won't listen to you. Anything good they will take away.
Also bring back the "Follow questions/myTake" feature please!

i agree it should be up to the QA to when a question is closed. i like answers on mine! :'(
@Toad-1 I've never seen so many likes lol
I definitely agree! This is a really horrible "feature" to add.

I second that !
You are not supposed to fix things which aren't broken...
@JuicyBrain Thank you.
When I was most active on the site what made it good were the discussions.
Seems like one more step in killing them. To me the good thing about the site was never getting a quick answer it was the collaborative discussions.
That interaction dropped when it became possible to answer directly from the feed.
And the new changes will accelerate that.
Funnelling the site towards interaction being primarily between the asker and the answers ruins what was good to me.
Perhaps others like it.

Exactly and I thought they were doing something good. 😩 This is dumb where is the downvote? That's the only thing I wanted! Everything else what cool!
The downvote is coming back, guys. Don't worry. ;)
@RainbowFanGirl it is so dumb, but i agree with private opinions a little, but that is what messages were for right? #bringbackthedownvote
In our view, @hazoplmeught, messages lack the context of the question. This is why we decided to introduce Private Opinions. ;)
yeah as i said i do like private opinions though, that was a really good feature

I usually pick MHO at day 29, after the question was made.
@lime_rampljuset dude I pick close to the limit as well. I 1) forget and 2) will not pick for at least a week.
How are moderators supposed to do their jobs, if they can't seen the new posts?
That's a very good question!
Exactly because the trolls will just private their opinions, which is dumb and redundant to the PM feature.
