Why do some people always feel the need to one-up another person?

I was chatting with a casual aquaintance and hoping to network with him because we work in the same field, but the entire conversation was him subtly bragging and being somewhat snarky towards me. I explained to him I am very new to the field, and wanted any guidance, but he was just so condescending. I found it weird that someone so senior/tenured as him had so little goodwill and positivity to pass on. I wasn't asking for a job or for him to do anything, just any advice or words of wisdom since he's been in the field for over 7 years.

Don't people who have stuff going on for themselves, usually want to share with others? I don't know why but the way he acted left a weird taste for me.
