If a man fails as protector because he couldn't is that like a huge blow to his ego/pride?

I've heard of a couple cases like that. Every single time that happens, even if it wasn't the guy's fault (ex: he gets outnumbered by 3-4 guys, beaten and his girlfriend still gets raped), it's like he's literally destroyed.

He goes on for a long time doubting himself, his manhood, his character, etc and has a hard time letting that one go and moving on. Is it that bad if he couldn't protect his loved one, even if he really wasn't able to do anything?
