He says he can’t be with me because he’s struggling with depression. is this plausible or a cop out?

Anonymous
This guy and I have been dating for the past 4 months and he recently broke things off with me. He told me that he wants to be with me but he’s in a really dark place due to his depression and anxiety. We got into an argument one day and i decided not to talk to him for the rest of the day and he says that my decision to do that showed him how painful it would be if i decided to actually leave him. He said that he’s in enough pain and doesn’t want to take the risk of me leaving him later on due to his issues. Is this a valid reason or does it sound like he’s trying to let me down gently?
