What does it mean when a guy randomly “checks in on you”?

This guy I haven’t spoken to in years just messaged me randomly on Snapchat asking me how I was doing. We go to the same church and he at one point used to be my personal trainer but we never had a close relationship. He said that he hadn’t seen me at church in a while and wanted to “check in on me”. Is that a form of showing interest or wanting to start a conversation or is that just a innocent thing? Why do men do this?
