I completed a small task given to me at college and this one year senior guy kinda mentor said "You're awesome". I took that as a compliment said thank you to which he replied "I'm just kidding, you're not awesome". Is he making fun or flirting?

Hmm... not enough info. I would base my decision in interactions with him in previous situations.

“that may be his sense of humor or he might be a smart ass”.

If it was me... the next time I see him, I would give him a back handed compliment and see if he laughs.
