Take Responsibility For Your Obesity

Years ago, I was going to McDonald's probably 3 times a week at least. I stopped by for breakfast or dinner right on cue and after a few years of this and not exercising, I was overweight because McDonald's caused me to be overweight. I said that both jokingly and repeatedly for years, except, that's not true at all. McDonald's didn't do anything other than exist. I used my hard earned money, to pay for the gas, to then drive to one of the five near my house, and of my free will, I supported that clown every week of my life. Now it's years later, and I've not been to a McDonald's, and you know what? Those same five McDonald's are in the same exact place, they advertise to me using the same types of commercials they did back then. They haven't changed, but I had to in order to learn to take care of myself.

A lot of the struggle with weight loss is a mental one. We want to blame the whole world for our own actions, but never accept the responsibility for what we have chosen to do to ourselves. I mean, for me, it's not like McDonald's came to my house, cleaned out my pantry, replaced all my goods with their products, and left. I made the choice to go to them. I remember one afternoon wondering to myself, how much money have I given to the clown because it's got to be a lot, and on my bank statement purchase after purchase on down the line, were McDonald's, McDonald's, McDonald's. It was totally embarrassing to me, and I felt ashamed of it. But also in that moment of realization, it was recognizing that I also had the power to change my habits and do better for my own health.

It starts with "I," as cheesy as that sounds. I didn't work out, I didn't eat right, I was snacking all day, I wasn't cooking enough, I would rather take an elevator one flight up then walk it. I made the choice to eat at McDonald's when there were other options available to me. If you want to make those healthful changes to your world, own up to how you've gotten there because if your mantra is to continue to blame everyone and everything for your own actions, you won't get very far.

You have never been, nor will you ever be, completely powerless against the disease of obesity.

There is no conspiracy out to get you personally and keep you fat and unhealthy. There are companies pedaling unhealthy foods and selling unhealthy products (those have always been there), but there are also grocery stores and healthier options that are equally available to you (which have also always been there), if you allow them to be and seek them out. Understand that being unhealthy is YOUR choice, and each day you drive to McDonald's or wherever, or choose not to workout, that's you choosing to continue on the path you've chosen towards obesity if you aren't there already. I can't make any changes for you that you don't want to make for yourself, so if reading this, you having nothing but a defensive attitude or you're still blaming everything else outside of taking responsibility for yourself, then you aren't ready, and you may never be ready, but again, that's your choice and with that choice, you will be the one that has to deal with the consequences. If that's fine with you, than it is, moving on, but if it's not, re-evaluate how you got to this point, and own your part, and take action to change it.
