you should find a friend or someone you know who surfs that can help you learn, and go somewhere that's good for beginners nearby. maybe borrow a board and wetsuit of theirs and find out if it's something you are interested in. that's a good way to start, but if not then yes take lessons and maybe rent a board. you can get used wetsuits way cheap at play-it-again sports or other stores. if you go with a friend, make sure the area is safe, like know where the sandbars are and how the surf is. do NOT just go out and do it. you won't learn anything and you could get hurt. and it's really obvious...but use a longboard and leash :)

Google surfing around your area. Find some places that teach lessons/classes and call them up. Tell them you're interested in learning but want to try it first. They may let you come out for free once or may allow you to pay for each lesson on your own. Don't sign up for like 10 lessons or anything until you know you like it first and want to keep doing it.
