I've developed an allergy to coconut milk, am I allergic to coconut?

So, while growing up I was able to eat coconut chunks, bounties, etc.
When I make curry I usually put a small amount of coconut cream. The other week my brother made a curry with a tin of coconut milk and I came out in a rash. Another brother made me a curry again with coconut milk, and again had the same reaction. I haven't had coconut cream since the first reaction.

Am I allergic to coconut as a whole or is coconut milk different in some way? I'm a bit scared to try actual coconut now to find out...

It could be other ingredients in the curry that you're allergic to. There's no way to know unless you try it again. Try only coconut milk one day and try the curry without coconut milk the other day. You might also be allergic to something that is completely irrelevant to the curry with coconut milk.

I've already done this - all the ingredients I'm fine with apart from coconut milk. But thanks.

Then it has to be the coconut milk. And since coconut milk contains the same components as coconut flesh, you might be allergic to coconut as well.

I'm wondering if I've never had a reaction to the cream because there's less coconut in it? I'm only mildly allergic (or not had enough to trigger a huge reaction). I get a rash up my arms, like big red itchy dots. And things like bounties are mostly sugar and not much nut. Curious!! Thanks for the help

The body changes every couple of years and you could become allergic to something almost spontaneously. It also depends if there were any additives or the brand itself and how they process their product. Try a peice of raw coconut and see if you're ok.

Canned stuff is all of preservatives and may have gone bad. Always buy fresh coconut and then extract milk.

The first time it was fresh coconut milk, the second time it was canned. So no difference sadly

You cannot develop allergy to coconut overnight. Surely there is something else besides coconut that makes you sick. Try eating fresh coconut for a change. Are you on some medication as well?

As I've got older I've developed allergies to some thing. Not overnight but gradually.
Yes I am, but they shouldn't effect that.

Some medications which are used to lower blood pressure can be adversely affected by Coconut milk or oil intake. You might have lower blood pressure

No... Anti depressants, birth control and my antibiotics for a chest infection (as of yesterday) probably aren't causing that... I didn't eat much coconut as a kid so maybe I just never knew.
But I know as I've aged my tolerance for medication has gone down

Well, IMHO one of these medications has a side effect that is related to coconut intake. Stop eating coconuts or inform your doctor who might suggest an alternative medication which does not interfere with coconut intake

Yes in fact they do and the should be able to help you find what it is you're allergic to and may be able to help you remedy the allergy. I have some severe allergies going on myself and I've considered going to see one. But in my case I know what's causing it and I just need to eradicate it.

I just seem to be allergic to more and more things. Mostly medications but now it's food... I've never been allergic to any food before

It might be a good idea to see if an allergist can help. Try google for a allergist in your area.
