How do you maintain a positive attitude?

Lately I've been trying to change my lifestyle. I've changed my diet, I've began to meditate, I've even been trying to maintain a positive attitude and keep my stress level down. It's so hard to not react to negative people. How do I get better at brushing negative people off without always feeling the need to respond to their negative words and actions?
