How many diseases have hit mankind without us noticing?

It's only really been relatively recently that we've been able to identify pathogens to the species level. Had corvid19 occurred in the past we would have dismissed it as a rather bad flu that killed quite a few old folk then forgot about it come summer. It seems logical that in earths long history we've been hit by lots of viruses and bacteria and not just the famous ones like the black death or Spanish flu.

So is it a case of naming this recent outbreak makes it seem worse than it really is?
