How can a person deal with flashbacks?

I've had a very traumatic life and lately I've been trying to feel better by just blocking out any bad memories when they come into my mind. But it's getting harder and harder to do that because they come so frequently, like every few minutes. These thoughts aren't about the same incident all the time, just various random bad things that have happened in my life. What is a way to have more peace?
