Very black and white way of thinking. There are very few organizations who are actually informed/educated on mental illness and know it’s not that simple but they lack the necessary funding to actually help the mentally ill on a nationwide scale. Unfortunately most of the societal influence comes from those two groups of j*rk-offs listed above which makes it very hard for the mentally ill to come forward and discuss their mental health issues. Not to mention that those two groups also tend to assume that the mentally ill are somehow at fault for their own mental illnesses. It also doesn’t help that there’s a certain political movement that likes to politicize mental health science in a similar way to how the Soviets used mental health science to persecute dissidents.
My mom was a bully in high school and at the age 62 years old never been to jail, or got in trouble. Today she is still bullying people and treating them horribly. Instead, you hear the mental health excuse, and excuses about her upbringing. Mental health to me is used as an excuse for the person to not take any responsibility for their actions while there are people out here who truly needs the attention, but they are overlooked. Mental health is being used as an excuse for people to get out of trouble. You hear the insanity defense used in trials when nothing is wrong with the individual/individuals. The mental health system in America is screwed because it's not used for it's intended purpose, but most importantly it's flawed. The healthcare system isn't any better over here because most American's can't afford it anyhow. Money is spent more on making excuses than the mental illness system itself. that's why when situations happen in our country it be too late to discover that person was mentally ill. People see the signs clear and day, but do nothing about it.

Mental illness is misunderstood by the masses. If you have never been in the medical field or law enforcement it is easy to dismiss a mental illness as a behavioral issue. Also, life is so busy that the average person does not have time to deal with the delays in life someone with mental illness can create. This leads to people shunning the mentally ill or being mean to them, but these behaviors worsen the conditions of those with mental illnesses and make it harder to deal with these individuals. I am a corrections officer now, but I was a Corpsman (medic) in the Navy. Because of my medical experience, I am more willing and patient than my other fellow COs. They think I take too long and am being too soft with inmates, but many inmates have mental illnesses that have gone untreated. I have been in less fights than my fellow COs because I take time to listen to inmates and check on their welfare. While this may slow down my duties a little and makes some parts of the job more difficult, this helps me with the ultimate mission of being a CO, which is maintaining peace and security in the jail. The inmates know I can fight when needed, but they also know I'm a human and can listen to them. Mental illness is stigmatized here in the U. S., but I think we are getting better at dealing with it over time.

India has this problem where most people mental illness is just people pretending. Especially tough foe teens who undergo it cause for one indian teens have a lot of pressure from their parents and family and on top they disregard mental illness as faking it. It's either that people with mental illness are looked down upon like they're less than human and shunned by society.
I'm honestly blessed to have parents who don't have such misbeliefs. Though I suffer from no mental illness, I'm happy they are educated about it and willing to learn more.
Yes it is, ironically though I think that more than 80% of Jamaicans are mentally ill. If you came here to live, you'd move back home so quickly unless you're mental like them. A lot of foreigners who would be misfits in their countries whether it be because they are seen as low achievers or fleeing due to poor reputation or mental illness issues come to live in Jamaica and cause more problems for us, I've dealt with a lot of them here.
@SuccessfulHornDog A lot of it is due to stress, poor nutrition, childhood trauma, alcohol and drug abuse and also karma, Jamaicans are very wicked people who play with black magic and other wicked things to people. People who do these types of things become mentally ill after a while. You were not out here to obstruct another person's happiness and peace on earth.
For some reason black people especially the ones in predominantly black countries play games with people's lives then they become sick in the head with the same demons coming back to them.

Well, here in the UK, I see people (mostly young women) making 'mental health awareness' posts on social media while claiming they are 'available for a chat' and attaching some helpline numbers.
The blunt reality is that they don't actually give a fuck, and will often drift away when their troubled friend tries to reach out to them. Often these posts are just made to make themselves look good.

I contend that mental health care is one of this countries' bigger issues. The lack of mental health care has made our prison system our de facto mental health care 'system'.
My feeling is that it's encouraged, rather. Obvious example is local traffic. Thais have the term ''mai pen rai'' - which is something like 'never mind' - for a lot of things here.

I actually think mental illness in the west is over glorified and a lot of unwell people are taught learned helplessness.
I saw a therapist once to qualify for a program and told her that you either control your emotions or they control you. She really disagreed with me on that and it floored me.
I can't imagine how much life would suck if I didn't draw from inner strength and I had to depend on external factors more (I'm not a complete island) to be happy & stable.
The truth is there are mental illnesses that are very hard to control. Tourette’s is one them.
Simply assuming you can “tough it all out” is blatant pseudoscience. It’s no different than saying that mental illness isn’t real. A mental health issue isn’t the same as a scraped elbow.
You absolutely can control tourettes, to a limited extent. It takes a lot of focus to hold it in from what I hear.
I am just so sick of people using disabilities as an excuse. I have autism, dyslexia and A. D. D, but I'm not going to use that to justify poor behavior.
People need to learn to value strength of will far more. There's too many fucking pussies who want to infantilize us.
Mental health illnesses come in different levels of severity. Did your learning disabilities inhibit your daily activities? I have dyscalculia and it only caused problems for me during math courses but other than that, it doesn’t bother me elsewhere.
Well, cry foul all you want, but Trump is certifiable. His last 2 months only exemplify this. He has NPD, a real disease, dude. He really IS mentally ill. He never was competent to run a country, and the people who enabled his illness shouldn't be representing anyone either.

He has NO sense of decency.
THAT is not an opposing political view. I disagree with a lot of Republican views, and many Democrat views as well. And, there are people in both parties who are scummy as well. Trump never "drained the swamp", he just brought vipers in to play with the alligators, and set new lows for everything he did in government because of "who and what he IS", not his politics (which don't exist).
Dude, I'm gonna say this one last time. Maybe it will penetrate your thick skull. Two things: 1) Trump exhibits and acts out EVERY single symptom of NPD - Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Go look it up for yourself. It's a REAL thing, not something my "news source" made up. It's science, dude.
2) My FAMILY has direct experience working with him, and his family, going back to his father's middle income housing projects. All the shit you hear about how he does "business" is not only true, it's worse than that. So don't tell me I'm parroting CNN or the mainstream media. Unless he’s actually been diagnosed by a mental health professional who knows him personally, you can’t say for sure he has NPD. If you bother to look up NPD, you will see he exhibits every single symptom: Being overly boastful, exaggerating one’s own achievements Pretending to be superior to others Lack of empathy for others Looking down on others as inferior Monopolizing conversations Impatient, angry, unhappy, depressed or has mood swings when criticized Easily disappointed when expected importance is not given Always craves for “the best” in everything Has a very fragile self-esteem
Any layperson can see this. Combine that obvious observation with the multiple stories of those who worked with him in the White House and were either fired or quit, and those who worked with him in the past, you have more than anecdotal evidence... you have a preponderance of evidence. Of course, "your side" wouldn't consider anything his niece had to say as more than hearsay either. But to the "other", it's just more confirmation of the actions already viewed in public.
Besides, how MANY doctors would be enough doctors to agree on a diagnosis to satisfy those who don't believe it? How many? Just look at the symptoms, and how his behaviors have never deviated from them during his entire tenure, and how it's basically an outline of his entire business and personal life. It's a slam dunk, or, do a Rudy Guliani.
Plenty of left wing politicians exhibit the same symptoms yet I don’t heard you calling them out on it.
Just another example of TDS. Even out of office, Trump is still president of your mind.

I have a extensive understanding of the issue of mental illness, I think it’s too often used as an excuse for bad behaviour. It’s up to people to have control over their own mental faculties. Compassion and understanding has boundaries.
