okay, so I am having a friend over, and we want to have a sushi bar. I'm going to have lots of fresh veggies to put in it, I have the rice, the nori, the bamboo mat, sauces, and basically everything I will possibly need... except for the fish. My grandpa just gave me a whole bunch of frozen tilapia, but that won't work very well since I don't feel comfortable eating it just thawed since it won't be fresh. I also have canned tuna (the epitome of awful sushi, but it will have to do for SOME variety)... So, I'm stuck with cooked tilapia and canned tuna for fish. I want to get some avocado tomorrow anyway, so I want to pick up some fresh fish while I'm out? would a fresh tuna, fresh salmon, or smoked salmon be cheaper in the grocery store, and how much do you think I'm looking at, including the avocado? I am pretty much extremely broke and am hoping on less than $10.
Tilapia is not ideal for sushi. Canned tuna is NOT sushi, since it is cooked.
Head down to your local grocery store and pick up a fresh salmon fillet. Based on health standards, they shouldn't have any life-threatening bacteria growing on them. You also need Japanese rice (the sticky kind) and dried seaweed.
Of course, you can always go out to a nice Japanese restaurant.

Also, if you'd like, you could do 'vegetarian sushi' or use imitation crab. I know it won't be as authentic as most would like, but since you're with you friend and having fun, it shouldn't matter. :)
