Well, your friend has every right to be attracted to whom he is attracted, even if his expectations exceed his ability to attract them. Furthermore, the pot calling the kettle black doesn't negate the fact that the kettle is black. Now your friend has no right to expect any woman to return his affections, and it would seem his desire exceeds his erotic capital.
You might want to ask your friend what is he doing to make himself attractive to the women he would like to date. Then take the opportunity to point out that it is unlikely to attract the type of woman he wants if he himself remains overweight. You could take that opportunity to tell him that perhaps it's time to increase his own level of attraction, if he is to have any hope of attracting a healthier looking woman.
"I have to be attracted to the girl I date," isn't an excuse. It's the truth. You're retort should be, "Then become attractive to the girl you want to date."

he needs to be exposed to more women who aren't completely skinny. the way media presents women as a valid love/sexual interest only if they're skinny-it isn't weird for him to only be attracted to skinny girls. I don't think he should date anyone he isn't attracted to,that would harm both of them, but which bodies we're attracted to is largely a matter of socialization when you look through history and the fact that women's bodies naturally carry more fat.
I think he is projecting what he feels subconsciously...about HIMSELF. I think that he feels HE is disgusting and unattractive. Usually when people have complete and utter disdain for someone, sometimes it has a lot to do with the fact that they are similar to that which they disdain. Needless to say,he is not happy with his own appearance, therefore projecting it onto these ladies.
