Windows 10: Why You Shouldn't Upgrade

DooMguy

So I was doing some thinking today about the windows 10 upgrade. If you're running windows 7/8 You'll know about the upgrade. It's a Free upgrade right ? Surely You should download it ? Personally I say no

This is the current situation for me. Microsoft is telling me to JUST DO IT ! Trying to get me to upgrade and make my dreams come true but I say no. Here are some of the reasons why I'm saying "No Microsoft please no"

If it ain't broke don't fix it

So windows 10 is supposed to be an "upgrade" right ? But what exactly am I upgrading ? There is no glaring error/problem with windows 7. And if windows 7 isn't broken why would I attempt to "upgrade" it ? Because Microsoft told me to do it ?

I've been seeing quite a few people online commenting that they installed windows 10 and decided to go back to windows 7. That sends a clear message to me. The windows 10 "upgrade" simply isn't worth it. I never saw people trying to go back to vista when 7 was released. For the most part windows 7 was a polished version of vista with improved stability, a clear upgrade

Here's some comments about windows 10 from random people on the internet (from various sites)

I went from a real copy of Windows 7 to Windows 10. I didn't like it and went to back because i couldnt get over half my programs to work for it so I went back to Windows 7 . . .

My computer upgraded to 10 without my consent . . .

I decided not to upgrade to W10. I am in the process of migrating to Linux.

There is much more but I'll leave it at that

Microsoft is out of touch with their customers

If you've been browsing any windows 10 articles or videos you've probably seen linux mentioned quite a few times. Why is that ? It's simple, microsoft isn't providing their customers with what they want so they're going elsewhere.

When I think back to the windows 8 release and the removal of the start menu. I wonder what Microsoft where thinking. I imagine it went something like this:

MS employee 1: What kind of OS do they want ?

MS employee 2: I dunno

MS employee 3: Lets just fuck their OS up

MS employee 1&2: agreed

It left windows 8 desktop users looking like this

Windows 10, why you shouldn't upgrade

But here comes windows 10 now and people want to praise microsoft and give them a pat on the back because they brought it back. Why did they get rid of it in the first place ? Who were they listening to ? Who asked for it to be removed ?

Just to rub salt in the wound they hid the power button as well

I don't really think they improved things in windows 10 at all.

Who asked for cortana ? Who asked for the apps ?

This here is a quote from a video I watched, it really says it all. "I want my OS to just be the thing that all my programs run on" I think that will resonate with a lot of windows 7 users who don't want to upgrade. Windows 10 adds a whole load of things that I would never use and on top of that you can't get rid of them

I'll quote a forum post

That is really annoying and unacceptable. I demand that anything that is installed on my computer is installed only at my discretion, and that if I choose to uninstall it, I have the right and ability to do so at will. Get your act together and respect the individual user and property owner's rights. I don't want Cortana, Xbox, and several other features of Windows 10 which are being rammed down our throats. No arguments

and the response from a mcirosoft employee . . .

hi, thank you for your interest in Windows 10 . . . I would like to inform you that you cannot completely uninstall Cortana

that takes the P out of PC. The whole point of a PC is that you can do what you want with it, why not make metro and cortana optional for those who wouldn't use it ? Cortana can actually be removed but not without unnecessary hassle but here's the thing. The reason why I brought an OEM OS is because I didn't have to spend time uninstalling bloatware/all of the things I didn't want on the OS

That's why I liked windows 7/Vista gadgets and the side bar. They were there, just in the background. You didn't have to use them and you could easily remove it. Why would I put myself through the unnecessary hassle of removing something I didn't want to install in the first place ? I also have a feeling that an update could somehow break/corrupt the OS of those who removed it . . .

DX 12

Surely if you're a gamer you should upgrade for DX12 right ? mmm . . . I'm not convinced. I don't always play new games, sometimes I'm happy to spend quite a lot of time playing older games but first let me address the elephant in the room. Enter AMD, one word. mantle. That is all

DX 12 is just an API that's it

If you've got an AMD (R7+) card you don't need to upgrade. If you've got a nvidia card . . . you're out of luck

It's "Free"

That's right, it's completely free. The people who work at microsoft are just charitable people who want to make the world a better place. At the end of the day they're a corporation and they exist to make money. Microsoft aren't there to tuck you into bed and read you a bed time story, they're trying to get into bed with you.

It seems to me what they're trying to do is relationship marketing. They want to sleep with you. They want to know what you've been buying, and after that get you to buy more

Windows 10: Why You Shouldn't Upgrade

Corporations don't give things out for "free" it's their way of advertisement. They may say it's "free" but that's just how they get into your pocket and get you to let your guard down. What's that an app is on sale ? Oh are these apps recommended ? Did 'helpful' cortana tell you that you might like this app ?

good goyim, install the adware OS and buy the apps or buy premium microsoft services

One way or another MS will get the money out of you

It's "secure"

I see this as a myth. It's similar to what you might hear when someone writes "apple doesn't get viruses" a big part of security falls down to the user. The OS can increase restrictions on the user to increase security or they can try to turn the OS into an impenetrable fortress but still for the most part you keep the OS free simply by being careful online, check what you download, know what you're downloading etc.

When it comes to the security I think it's only a matter of time before it's breached, personally I think hackers actually have more incentive to attack windows 10 because of that nice big target. MS have added.

Windows 10: Why You Shouldn't Upgrade

I'm sure some of you will be familiar with this image. This here AI ended up being an embarrassment for microsoft. She didn't last very long but she did show us what can happen when AI goes off the rails. I wonder, could something similar happen to Cortana ?

This is just speculation but due to the AI I feel that an attack on windows 10 could, in some ways, end up being worse then an attack on windows 7/8. Just some food for thought. No OS is impenetrable, it could only be a matter of time . . .

It works across multiple devices

Personally I don't see this as a benefit at all, I don't own a windows tablet, nor a phone. And I don't plan on getting one. I tend to separate my tech. My phone is just a phone (not a smartphone) just a regular brick, my MP3 player holds all of my music and my PC is just my pc.

I'm sure that many people could be in a similar situation. They may only have a desktop at home and that's about it, especially amongst the older generation. How would an OS that runs on multiple devices benefit them in any way ?

Another useless feature that no one asked for. I'm sure that many people would prefer an OS that's built only for a desktop PC from the ground up. That's how windows 8 ended up as the travesty it was on release, since it was designed for desktops and tablets. Now they've gone and done the same thing again

I'm going to wrap things up here because I feel its dragging on a bit (I think this is the longest take I've ever wrote)

One positive point

Despite all of the above I do see one niche for windows 10. And that's in education. Microsoft do have partners in the education sector I think that students can benefit the most from windows 10.

With the edge browser and cortana could search the web for sources of information while students work on other tasks. Then they can check what the AI has found, annotate the page and save it for later. On top of that electronic textbooks can lower the cost of education (plus they don't have to lug them around) etc.

But for the average user I just don't see any benefit. Most of the time people in my workplace run, excel, outlook, use the (C)MIS and browse the web that's all. It seems like a hassle to upgrade for little to no gain. In the end I think that most businesses simply don't need what windows 10 offers

So that wraps things up from me, I was going to cover a few more points but . . .

Anyway if you're not upgrading then join the official #Windows7Holdouts club

P.S. I think it would be nice if MS just put on the brakes and take a step back to windows 7. Just release an optimized version of win 7 for desktop / laptop only that's all, it ain't rocket science. We need windows 9

P.P.S RIP Tay. Make windows great again

P.P.P.S. if things don't work out I'll be looking at VMware and KDE. If you have windows 10 and you like it feel free to disagree/object
