Make the Most Out of Your Apartment

1. Make the space your own

This is a no brainer, but a lot of people are living in apartments that they come home to and they don't feel at peace or they are so clogged with clutter, that they are neither warm, nor inviting. Bring bits and pieces of your personality into the space that make you feel happy. If for example, your favorite color is blue, but your landlord says no to a paint job, buy some blue wall decals which are easy to install and do not peel the paint or if you can't afford a blue couch, buy or DIY some large pillows for your couch.

2. Create a green space

It can sometimes be hard to find some greenery especially if you live in a concrete jungle and are completely lacking in either a balcony or a backyard. Bring the outdoors in with a little herb garden on a window sill or some cute succulents on a kitchen table to brighten the place up.

3. Get to know your neighbors

Even if you don't so much as ever do more than exchange some occasional pleasantries, try to get to know your direct neighbors a bit. You don't want neighbors who are your enemies. You want a neighbor who's going to notice a weirdo hanging around your door, or bring your cat back in if she escapes to their balcony.

4. Use decor to create more space

Smaller apartments can feel like cages. Maximize the space by buying furnishings which can convert or be stowed away when not in use freeing up room and take your designs, patterns, mirrors, pictures, and curtains from the floor to the ceiling to give the illusion of more height and space.

5. One thing in, one thing out

Clutter is the enemy of any small space and a sign of a disorganized mind. If you buy something new for your place, send something out or donate it. If you buy a new shirt, get rid of your old shoes. If you buy a pack of paper, make sure and shred that old box of two years ago receipts you no longer need.

6. Socialize

Sure it may not be wise to invite 40 people over for your birthday, but just because you have a smaller apartment, doesn't mean you should avoid socializing in your place. Friends...good ones anyway, will understand and just enjoy being in your company. Push the furniture into the walls, and make some room, and borrow some chairs. Plus having booze and/or free food will usually attract even the most discerning to hang out for a little while.

7. Let there be light

Sometimes the lighting inside an apartment is not the best or you're so close to other buildings that windows don't really help. Try and make sure each room has at least 3 lighting sources so that you can properly illuminate your room and elevate your mood.

8. Slenderize it

Your apartment has additional small spaces you can squeeze small organizational pieces into like between the fridge and the wall, in an entryway, on side or above your toilet, underneath your bed, etc. Buy pieces that are designed for these tiny areas but can provide you with that much more organization.
