Everyone knows and loves the original Sound of Music. A widowed naval captain enlists the services of a beautiful, vibrant but befuddled young?

nun to help him raise seven children against the gorgeous backdrop of the Austrian mountains, then marries her and escapes the encroaching Nazi regime to live happily ever after.

My question is this...

Why the fuck does Austria need a navy?

  • Baron (Freiherr) von Trapp, was an Austro-Hungarian Navy officer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_von_Trapp

Austria has no navy, of course.
    But Austro-Hungaria had one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austro-Hungarian_Navy

    • After World War I Austria and Hungary were deprived of their coasts and their navy was confiscated. Their former ports on the Adriatic Sea, such as Trieste, Pola, Fiume and Ragusa, became parts of Italy and Yugoslavia (today, what had been the Yugoslavia coast is split among Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro).

    • Wait... the Austro-Hungarian navy went out of service at the end of WWI. George Von Trapp escaped with his family during the Nazi encroachment. I was right. Score!

    • I don't think Von Trapp was in active service in the disbanded A-H navy. Or he was just recommissioned in another army function.

  • every country needs a navy no?
