Why do some people talk quietly or softly when a certain person comes around or says hi?

Like if someone sees their friends and will talk normally and say hi, and chat with them, but when a certain person is walking and then stops to say hi, and then they say hi so softly or quietly that you can barely here them. Even if you don't bother or annoy them, even if you don't talk to them everyday, even if you are nice to them, and never insulted them or was mean or anything like that, and that person was assured by the other person that they were "perfectly fine", and did nothing wrong, why do they talk differently than they normally do? And that person was talking about the other person in class, and the person she was talking about heard about it. So any ideas?
