Why does it seem like a lot of African Americans say that they don't identify with "black culture"?

  • I think people often associate black culture with a very fixed likes and characteristics... and the millions of black people in America all have different backgrounds, likes, dislikes, and so on.
So, it's natural that a lot of people aren't all into the same thing.
Stereotypical things about black culture: rap, sagging jeans, sneakers, acting 'hard', etc. And that's just not the life for many African Americans, and it shouldn't be how black culture is defined because that was never the culture of all black people and it never will be.

  • well I'm one of those, and the color of your skin doesn't mean that u are part of some culture, the fact that define who u are is the people w/ u grew and the kind of education that u had

What Girls Said 1

  • The stereotypical culture that other people think reflect all black people is what they are usually referring to. Some people can't seem to fathom the idea that not all black people behave in the way they are portrayed on tv but w/e.

  • Because they don't want to be lumped in with what white people think black culture actually is.
