It's often another way of saying "cheer up" to people who might look sad or upset. Someone suggesting that you smile, can sometimes cause someone to involuntarily smile and cheer up for a moment at least.
Yes, I think that when people say that, they do so with good intent. They see someone who might look unhappy, and they go out of their way to approach that person and it is a way of trying to cheer up a person. Not something that should be taken as an offense. Sometimes it's just nice to smile and say thank you, for their attempt at a bit of good will.
well, I've learned to never even try to talk to a stranger women beyond "I'll get this with fries" because the moment you start to talk to them they turn into total bitches and avoid you the next time because they think you are going after them.
Because it's widely known that smiling subconsciously controls your own mood. So when people tell you this, they encourage you to be happy. It's not selfish. They just remind you that smiling is good for you.
well, once i was walking and saw this printing that has smiley face and next to it "smile" then i suddenly smiled and it was printed in my mind for couple of weeks.
People usually say that, cus they want you too feel better, not to please themselves. Especially friends and family.

a lot of girls complaining about. depends on how its said, & 99% of your life is how you react to things. Sometimes you can forget that you are being way too depressed. So someone says smile, shows that humanity are not all cunts cause someone took their time to care bout your wellbeing which they don't have to do. If you think someone telling you to smile is bad, then you just that part of humanity that's a cunt. Last I checked being a cunt is not a gd thing

I think they are saying that to spread positivity which other people stated that smiling reduces stress and raises mood booster chemicals in the brain.
Random dudes on the street will tell me "smile, beautiful" as I pass by. I don't find it creepy. They're complimenting me but I smile on command for no one lol
Men grow up in a sexist society. We all have internalized gender bias from societal conditioning we undergo, and the societal messages we receive.

Often men do this to women... I got it alil too often and annoys the crap out of me because I tend to have a Resting bitch face. However I try to think more positive and see it as compliment because they think you're pretty but would look nicer if you smile. (not that it's any of their damn business).. but you get what I mean. If you weren't attractive MOST LIKELY they wouldn't bother say anything in the first place. Hope this helped xx
I usually laugh it off... i think you would look like an escaped crazy person if you had a smile on your face all the time lol also I can imagine if people did that the muscles must start to hurt.

That's pretty bitter way to think. I have had some really sit days and then someone told me to smile guess what I did and it made me happier and better yet they got happy at seeing me happy

You're right. I would maybe do that if the person looked really sad but even than I'd do it with some humour... not insisting and assuming the joke will bring the smile automatically :D
it depends. is they're saying it in a "it'll all be fine life is great" way then I don't mind but if they say something like "hey babe give us a smile why don't ya ;)" then they're just being a twat
Never had this happen to me but then I see beauty in the smallest of things and everyday is a fresh start. I like walking and it gets rid of all my stress.
There are a few situations that this happens and usually it's with friends, coworkers and bosses if we work in customer service. The times that this is strangers is usually at some social place like a club or party or game or something like that. If it is out of the blue from a random stranger outside of a social event then you can bet it was someone trying to flirt or stir up a conversation.
You might be scary looking and they feel uncomfortable if you continue being around them that way.

Don't do it. For me I may not be smiling because I am thinking about something hard, but I am not in these least bit sad. Then some one says "Smile" and I get really angry, because smiling is something I can't do on command and it's annoying for people to tell you what to do.

I've had people I don't know do it to me. If you don't do it to strangers, good.
No clue, had it happen to me many times. Have a snappy comeback if tjat happen something like "we can't all be empty headed bimbos like you" then watch her facial expersion change, and thats where you follow up " hey why arn't you smileing? :)"
