Wouldn't a 5-6 year-old still retain his first language?

Anonymous
My friend is a Colombian raised by his godparents. His parents unfortunately died in a horrible auto accident when he was between 5-6 years old.

His godparents (the wife having dual nationality and the guy an American) moved to Maine and no Spanish was ever spoken again. He's now in his mid 20's and can't spell the words anymore, nor read a Spanish newspaper and lost the capacity to speak it fluently.

There was a video of his 5th b-day where he sang a whole Spanish song and spoke fluently. He can't do that now. Wouldn't a kid at that age still retain his first (native) language?

He knows little of his first language by now. He remembers he used to speak it very good but now that memory seems like a gap to him.
Sometimes he dreams about his early years but can't make up what he said in his dreams.
