Why would a guy always call me by my first name in private but calls me Miss (Surname) in his company's Whatsapp group chat?

I find it a bit odd, lol.
He is in his thirties and is the social worker of my mom's nursing home.

That type of behavior is not that odd after all. A lot of guys behave that way.

He takes some liberties to call you by your first name in private, knowing that nobody is around to witness his behavior. He does it in the hope to break the ice between you and to be a little closer.

However, when in company of others, he does not want to give the impression that he is too close because of possible negative impact for him (or you). Mainly in view of the fact that he works in a public place where a certain personal distance is perhaps required, he does not want to give the impression that you are on closer terms than with the other members of the group.

This type of behavior is more likely to happen in Asia/Europe where social closeness is not always perceived as a good thing and where contacts are much more formal. You are aware that in Asia, you can have several formal approaches to a person, depending on his/her social status.

Thanks. My opinion is that (most) people that ask questions deserve a full answer and not just a plain 3 letter word. I take time to think and possibly also do some research work before I give answers. That is why my replies are usually the size of a novel :-)
